“We don't know what caused the accident,” Orlando police Sgt. Wanda Ford said. “We just know the helicopter did go inside the guest house and thankfully there were no residents inside.”

Smith said firefighters arrived just minutes after the crash and found heavy flames coming from the apartment. The fire was quickly extinguished by 15 crew members.

Firefighters were then able to enter the garage apartment and found a body.

Smith said the building was heavily damaged by the crash and fire.

An unknown number of residents were inside the main part of the house, but the guest house where the crash happened was empty.

“We have no confirmation on how many people were in the helicopter, but there were no residents inside the guest house,” Ford said.

WESH has been told 33 customers have been impacted by the outage and it's not clear how long it will take to get the power restored.

Police have several streets blocked off and say there are power outages in the area as a result of the crash.

“It's going to be closed off for a while because this is an investigation,” Ford said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the helicopter that crashed was a Robinson R44.

The helicopter went down 2 miles west of the Orlando Executive Airport, which police say was where the helicopter took off.

The origin and destination of the helicopter's flight and the pilot's identity were not immediately released.

It's unclear if anyone else was on board at the time.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating what caused the crash.

People who live near the crash scene say they are in shock.

Don Carr said he heard the helicopter flying very low, saying it sounded like it had lost power seconds before impact.

“It just came over our house very, very low,” said Carr, who lives two blocks from the crash.

As a Vietnam veteran, he immediately recognized the sound of a helicopter in distress.

“This was a very slow, ‘whop, whop, whop,’ followed three or four seconds later with a boom and then everything went dark,” Carr said. “The impact was a very solid ‘boom’ and then it was dead silent.”

Carr says he lost power for about 10 minutes.

“I stayed in my office for a moment, then all of a sudden, I saw the equipment rolling through, hazmat, and I said we have a really bad problem on our hands.”
