Around 2 p.m. Monday, Air Canada flight AC001 took off from Pearson Airport en route to Japan, when onlookers noticed the plane was smoking. Air Canada officials say one of the Boeing 777’s engines shut down and the crew carried out a routine emergency procedure that saw the aircraft carrying 318 passengers land safely back at Pearson around 4 p.m. (news.nationalpost.com) 更多...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
I had actually witnessed that accident, one day I saw this Air Canada, Boeing 777 that had an unusual flight plan over my house and it was really low and looked like it had just took off from Pearson International Airport, then it this left turn which looked like it was setting up a downwind approach to 24R or 24L or 23 or it was in a circuit pattern. Then the next day when the story was out I realized that I witnessed an accident.

An ETOPS quqalified aircraft is supposed to have highly reliable engines that are tested to exacting standards! So said Boeing when they spearheaded the ETOPS. This is some engine, so reliable that it can throw spares in the air.In a nutshell the philosophy of ETOPS is that "Two engines are more abundant than Four"
Would love to hear the ATC recordings if anyone can find it.
707 in air -- 1 engine konks off -pilot says no problem - we will be 1 hour late - 2nd and 3rd goes - pilot says no problem - we will be 3 hours late - a passenger says - gawd if that 4th engine goes we will be up here all night.
This really should not have been news, No one got hurt or Died, Plane landed safely, Crew did what they were trained to do.. Crew looses and engine, executes a "Air Return" to field, landed safely, I assume he declared an emergency. So what, I work maintenance control. Air Returns don't happen every day and it is for a numerous amount of reasons, and this one makes the news because it coughed a little metal. If people knew how much metal actually falls to the sky they would really be surprised.
