Dreamliner 787 Heathrow fire 'may be caused by short circuit'

A fire on a parked Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet at Heathrow Airport two years ago was probably caused by a short circuit, air accident investigators have said. However noteworthy "...Fire in the air?....The location of insulation near the device allowed the fire to spread......Cabin crew would have had difficulty locating the fire, as the device is located behind panels...The fuselage would probably have remained airworthy had the fire happened during a flight..The toxicity of the fumes was unknown.....But the BBC's Jonathan Sumberg says the Dreamliner was built with carbon composite materials which, when burnt, give off toxins."

How toxic are fumes within a burning 787 fuselage ? Has this been taken into account in evacuation timing ? See British Airtours 28M at Manchester . And after the evacuation, in no-wind/low-wind conditions..how far away from the debris should survivors be moved ?

The incident occurred on the ground. The 'in the air' part of the story appears to be a mix if information from the report and conjecture. I have trouble discerning which is which. Has anyone found a link to the report itself?

Joel you're right. The "In the air" section in this article is conjecture and this specific 787 incident occurred on the ground with an empty cabin.

Conjecture is valid in considering how to plan for and perhaps prevent the potential of a similar incident which might occur with a full cabin, either in the air or on the ground. Other a/c have had cabin fires in the air - Saudia 163 for example experienced an in-flight internal cabin fire where everyone on board, including the crew, died in the fumes in an intact cabin after a successful landing. The fire in Airtours 28M occurred on the ground outside the cabin but fumes killed 50 people inside the cabin during the evacuation.

We use conjecture in other cases; we put flotation devices under pax seats and oxygen generators above them but do not expect to use either during the lifetime of the airframe.

Going on the implications of this article perhaps a/c ELTs should not be buried in flammable insulation inside the pax cabin.

The did. I think this is the report on the 2013 incident that led to the fix.
