Who would have thought that American would outlast all of the iconic airlines if the good ole days!
Pan am, Braniff, Trans World Airlines
If I ever won the lottery please know that I would revive one of those aforementioned airlines
chalet
chalet 2
And you would lose not only the lottery money but your home, car, insurance policy, everything for those were horrible airlines in their final 15-20 years, terrible management, even worse passenger care.

Chalet, I live in St. Louis and saw first hand the demise of TWA. TWA was a great airline in every way, until it was taken over by Carl Ican. He sold off everything the airline had that had any value. His more famous actions were to sell it's reservation system, international routes and sold aircraft the airline owned then leased them back. After it no longer had the assets to be profitable he let it fall into bankruptcy and be taken over by AA. Employees were doing their best with what they had to make TWA a success. If it hadn't been for Ican, TWA would be flying today.
TXCAVU
Talk about lighting an Aviation match, just mention Carl Ican. His name is synonymous with a photo pf a vulture. Fortunately Doug Parker wants all these airlines (America West/US Air/AAL) to survive and become a new legacy.

Braniff was brought back once before. I'd pick PanAm - just something about flying those long hauls on 4 engines.

I did one to London once and it was probably one of the best flights I ever flew

I fly both airlines. I found the service on both to be quite good. The service in First class on domestic flights is infinitely better on American than on USAir. If the new combine provides the lower grade service in FC, it will be a pity.may have to stick to JetBlue.
cgrif771
Continental was great, merged with United, became crap. America West was great, merged with Useless Air, became crap...as someone has already said, take two of the worst airlines in the world, merge them, and what do you get...Crap Air! Mix in a dose of TSA, maybe a pinch of LAX...Buy an RV and forget flying!

False analogy. American isn't great.

I assume the miles that are in my accounts on both airlines will merge into one account after the merger?

Typically yes, delta even offered a bonus to move your world perks miles before a certain date in summer 2009

Delta also stopped flying to our airport for a few years. Then, cancelled my 330,000 Delta miles for non-use. A couple of years ago, they resumed servicing our airport ...
FritzSteiner
Fritz Steiner 3
My experience (from the inside) with corporate mergers is that the Boards of both corporations get together and review the policies of each before producing the merged corporation's policies. They essentially cherry-pick the worst features of each and merge them into the new policies.

So, if I were you, Dana, I'd expect that the NEW American's mileage policy would be:

Subtract the lesser mileage from the greater. The result will be your new mileage.

Enjoy!!!
JimScottJB
Jim Scott 2
That's what happened with the United/Continental merger, Dana. I didn't have very many United miles, but they were included in the "joint" account.

So if Fritz is right (if) it sounds like you have a lot of vacation travel to rack up really soon. Use it or lose it.

IMHO, this is going to be a giant cluster. A never-ending battle of egos, arguing over who bought who, and thousands of jobs lost, simply so Doug Parker can feel like a big shot at AA. I'm dreading this.

I am US Airways Chairman Frequent Flyer and have been flying West to East coast every week for years and have had to fly United and US Air both for my travel. With the United Continental merger I experienced very bad customer service as a result of that merger. While I realize that airlines have no choice but to merge for economic reasons - especially in the economy today - I hope this merger doesn't drive away US Air's loyal frequent flyers at the cost of an un-popular merger. I do see many positives from this union in expanded flight routes and new hubs for US Air. I hope that US Air and the old America West folks don't get lost in this deal - like what happened to the Continental folks with United.
JimScottJB
Jim Scott 0
All true about the United/Continental merger, Simon. I flew Continental exclusively, including to Europe 5-6 times a year, because they go non-stop to all my domestic and international destinations, so am now stuck with United. I've had some interesting conversations with ex-Continental flight attendants, none of whom came out of the merger well. Continental seemed to be the last decent U.S. carrier (free food, no fee for checked bags, etc.), and United's level of customer service is definitely a cut below Continental's. More mergers/fewer consumer choices is never a good thing, but this, like everything else, is driven by P&L statements. The sad truth is that, like them or not, I still will fly United just about every time because of more convenient schedules and destinations.
andytyler
Andy Tyler 1
It's funny because if you ask any pre-merger United frequent flier, they hate the continental upper management for gutting benefits of what pre-merger United Elites used to enjoy.

I for one enjoyed the merger despite losing a load of benefits. For one i have many more routing options with Continental's added route network to the UA network and can still gain miles on my acct without having to go to a different airline.

unlikely. The new American will almost certainly be 100% Oneworld, since AA is a founding member of that alliance.

Oh great, MORE consolidation, which means FEWER choices and HIGHER prices. Flying these days is like spending a day at the DMV, except with metal detectors and complimentary beverages.
JimScottJB
Jim Scott 2
What are we down to now....3 major domestic carriers (United, American & Delta)? Never good for consumers.
andytyler
Andy Tyler 1
Ironic since if you count inflation, airfare today is cheaper than it was in the 1980s, when there were a lot more major domestic carriers.
andytyler
Andy Tyler 1
fewer choices? Every time an airline merges, you get a bigger route network on that airline in which to fly and gather frequent flier miles. Much easier/convenient than changing airlines and juggling multiple frequent flier programs.

Plus USAirways and AA compete on very few routes. Their two networks are very different.

Scott:

You're taking what I said far too seriously, sir.

Nevertheless, having been through some corporate mergers I can tell you that the merged corporation's policies that emerge leave the combined employees (and customers) of each in a condition that's WORSE FOR THEM than thire status quo ante.

One issue that's already been discussed is what's going to happen vis a vis Star Alliance andOne World. Do you think one of 'em's just going to vanish after the merger?

It's almost a certainty that a lot of people are gonna get screwed.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
I imagine all of the posts up to now are by professionals who have lived through this scenario before. I'm sad to see that not one sees anything positive in the merger. I'm sure you all have a different and perhaps closer perspective than I. However, I worked at America West on the executive floor when Doug Parker was working side-by-side with Bill Franke pulling it out of bankruptcy, so I know him personally and have watched him work. Then Bill Franke retired and Doug took over - mere days before 9/11. Parker pulled off a miracle making AWA successful during those dire times, so successful they merged with USAirways. And today, American Airlines. Have faith people - he's a skilled business professional and an amazingly charismatic human being. I'm sure you're correct when you talk about job cuts, but I'm confident that long term it's the healthiest choice for both companies, or they wouldn't be doing it.
calente24
Who' with me?
SkyKing169
Karl Sieg 1
Then why did AA waste the money to redesign and repaint it's new logo and paint scheme?
The familiar USAirways flag logo and flying eagle AA logo are hard icons to replace. AA didn't seem to recognize the value of its trusted logo. So it will be interesting to see what comes out of this.
But, of all that occurs, it will likely line the pockets of big guys and leave everyone else less well off.
GBruce
The new American livery removes the two icons (AA and the Eagle) that enables a subtle shift to OneWorld in the future. The tail scheme is eerily similar to BA's (another OneWorld carrier) with a nod to USAir. Prepare for three major global carriers: OneWorld, Star, and SkyTeam. The next shoe, and perhaps last, will be the removal of the prohibition on cabotage.
JimScottJB
Jim Scott 1
True, Karl, as far as pockets being lined. I'm sure that the new airline will be called American with the new AA livery. You're also right....AA had one of the best airline logos in the business....a really bad move to replace it, many of us believe, although I almost never fly American any longer.
airbumford
Another airline in the history book was empire airlines and they were also treated like the TWA employees and put junior to pilots being interviewed by ALPA pilots. Good luck with this merger as history always seems to repeat.
patt46

Quit whining, that was a thousand years ago. Besides, Empire was little more than a commuter airline at the time. They (the employees) were lucky that Empire was picked up by US Air at all.
airbumford
Not whining. I guess we all should feel lucky that AA would approve merging with a "low cost carrier" such as yours. BTW it was Piedmont not USAir get your facts straight. Nice try with the insult.
patt46

You are correct it was Piedmont and then subsequently US Air. I stand by my original point that it happened so long ago that it is not worth whining over. Kind of like the argument about who actually brought EAL down.

If pampering is what you're after, mass transit probably isn't the answer. Basically the airlines do a pretty good job. People just seem to want it to be like it was when flying was mostly for the wealthy. Not gonna happen. $200 ticket or $10000+ charter w/pampering.

Moviela
Ric Wernicke 1
Pan Am died in the sixties. It lumbered along dealing with silly schedules, prices too low to make a profit, and the inability to operate in the country until allowed to buy National Airlines (ad slogan "I'm Pam, Fly Me!")in 1980. The airline continued by sacraficing itself, first hotels, then routes to Asia, South America, and Europe. Then the loss of the very profitable intra German services when the wall fell crimped the cash flow. After Libia took a 74 down over Scotland there was no will or money to continue.

Doug Parker has already said that he intends to keep the merged airline in onworld. Accruing star alliance points will no longer be possible.
Shenight
Thank you, Elizabeth! From the experience of those that have watched mergers, does the cost of a ticket usually go up or down? It seems logical to me it would go up...less choices, but wondering if they sometimes run sales to celebrate the merger. Trying to figure out if I should buy now or wait a few weeks for my tickets to Dublin.
TXCAVU
Diane, thanks but, DO NOT BUY to Dublin. Fly another carrier. The reason why ticket prices will go up is because there is now less competition for routes. Expect to see deals but price shop as your deal may not be so great after the add on fees. Also, check blogs for best information to Ireland and a suggestion "Flights to Ireland complaints". Why? Because people give details as to their travel experience both good and bad, but especially bad. Just a thought.
Shenight
What are the chances if I book a 7 hour non-stop with American today, that flight will still be operating in July after the merger? Wondering if anyone has a sense if tickets will go up or down after the merger?.
TXCAVU
Excellent and they worked this out last year. There were only 13 routes that overlapped and most of them were Domestic.
chaka
Bryan Biggs 1
You got most of them Chuck but let me throw a few more names out there so everyone can get a look at just how many parts go into this new airline. So US Airways is made up of Colonial, Mohawk, Allegheny, Piedmont, PSA, The former Eastern shuttle operation that Trump bought and then US Air and last but not least the 2005 merger with America West. American has Reno and Ozark thru the purchase of TWA. I am sure there is more in the history of American but I am not as familiar with their lineage as I am with US Air as I don't fly for them. (Yet) ;-) We are being told the name will remain American. US Airways is flying off into the sunset. Also the new paint job is it. No additions. I suspect we are going to the OneWorld Alliance that AMR is already a part of. Not sure as to what will become of the Star Alliance rewards.
chalet
chalet 1
Part of American´s lineage is Eastern, Braniff, Panagra (small but very efficient airline 50% owned by PanAm sold out to Braniff in 1967). Anyway I don't see any real good product coming out of this merge, nor any evil, neutral of you will.
TXCAVU
Good luck with OneWorld, especially if you fly international and have enough $$$ to to forced to re purchase tickets.

I've been through the buyout of TWA by American Airlines. AA told they Politicians & the public that they wouldn't make any big changes. That lasted a year, then they started laying off the TWA workers, moved flights to other Airports to keep their HUBs busy,& broke most of the great service promises. It didn't take them long to change the rules on Frequent Flyer miles either. AA pushes Frequent Flyer miles, but if you use them for busy routes, you'll find you can't get a seat unless it is not a popular time /route. Maybe this "merger" will be better for the customers this time around.
FritzSteiner
Fritz Steiner 1
Regarding AA's new livery (which looks darned good), where are the stars?

Our national anthem's "The Star Spangled Banner" ... isn't it?
muremm8693
I miss the old color scheme. I always got a thrill seeing one of those American planes take off. It represented the whole concept of a great country to me and what free enterprise was capable off creating. Now the planes look rather generic and yeah! Where are the stars anyway??
P.S. My eldest son has flown for American for donkey's years and sent me a model of a Super 80 a few years back. Now he is flying the 737. Would like a model of that with the new colors for comparison but think the old colors would win, hands down.Muriel Dandurand
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
I'm sure I'm missing the point, but I don't quite get why an American company automatically is connected to the National Anthem. It IS already flying the red, white & blue.

That being said, I always marveled at the brilliance of American's livery - particularly after I heard how much extra weight was added when the entire plane is covered in paint. Incredibly smart way of saving fuel.
muremm8693
Hi Donna,
It was just a matter of "to each his own" regarding what the old color scheme meant to me, an old, (OLD) patriot! Be well.

So as a frequent business flyer on United, I can share that they went through their problems, but most of them seem to be getting taken care of. As far as the flyers program, it looks like they looked at United and Continental's and looked at the customer feedback they had at the time of what was important. Then, took the feature from each airline's program that was the least costly and made it the policy for the new United. All in all, both United and Continental flyers lost something, and some gained a little something someplace. Over all, the new airline won.

It is very sad to me to see the merger of US Air and American Airlines. I wonder if this new airline will be in the Star Alliance, or One World? But the REALLY bad thing is that US Air is the WORST Airline in America. They were the second worst, but then they took over America West, the previous worst. Rather than US Air improving the America West business, America West brought US Airways down to their awful level. So I have to wonder.... Will the new US Air / AA be and improvement? I think not!
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
I'm just curious where you've gotten that datum. The part that shows US Air as the "worst" airline in America. Then when they took over America West (by the way America West took over US Air) etc. etc. Would you be good enough to send me the link to those statistics? Thanks.

No link, this is based on my colleagues and my own experience of flying ourselves and purchasing tickets for people we send all over the country and the world to take care of industrial projects. This is based on their feedback, as well as our own impressions.

Generally, first class is pretty good on most all airlines. But you know, not everyone flys in first class all of the time...
brussjon
brussjon 1
As an M&A strategy consultant I am sad for the employees as over the short- to mid-term a whole lot of them will lose their jobs. As an AA Exec Platinum I am sad for me since I will be foreced to fly during all of their integration f'ups. Never really understood the union positions, there has never been a stategic merger that resulted without major cuts and again sucks for us business road warriors that the first cuts will be the call centers.
TXCAVU
Ah,but YOU and most important, your business flyer dollars, drive the airline customer services. This is why Delta is wooing A/A business flyers so fervently.

If you and enough other high dollar business flyers demand a service, it will be done. Isn't it nice to have your own Exec Platinum customer service representative when you call Reservations? How about the great job the folks do at the Admirals Clubs?
brussjon
brussjon 2
I totally agree, I almost always get great customer service from the nice people who keep everyone out of the priority lines, to desk/gate agents, Admiral's Club agents--yes they save the day, to the flight attendants and yes, the fourth ring pickup Mrs. Smith talking to me from Dallas on the EP reservation line. As they combine the companies a percentage of all of these hard working folks will no longer remain employed with the "1 + 1 = 1.65" American Airways . . . and despite my 1.5 million miles I will have already gone to United which has made it thru the growing pains and matched the 1K and Premier for life.
TXCAVU
And so it goes. Doug Parker's real coup would be to create a "new" airline that starts with an efficient reservations system able to coordinate reservations in real time, across the board and OneWorld. The aircraft would all be clean and provisioned with enough food/beverages fresh enough to consume. And, finally, a singular system wide operations software that gives everyone from gate agents, to baggage/ramp staff and company Ops real time information, thus providing communication at every level. Everyone has access to the same page so they can operate efficiently. Just my 2 cents.

AWAAlum 1
I regret saying that, and fyi it was directed at chalet, Elizabeth. But I've grown so frustrated with reading so much criticism. I worked when the philosophy was if you felt something was wrong, and voiced it, that along with that it was expected that you would also suggest a possible solution. I don't see that happening here. Running an airline profitably is probably one of the most difficult challenges in the business world. Everyone here expresses their discontent, their disgruntlement - but nowhere do I see suggested solutions. Today's environment seems to be populated by malcontents and very few problem solvers. It's so easy to criticize but not quite so easy to fulfill everyone's expectations. It's difficult to imagine the airlines don't want to succeed, so why not give them the benefit of the doubt.
TXCAVU
Well thank you for your comments. As you come from "inside", I hold great respect for your words as they have basis...as do mine. There is a line which separates spirited conversation from petty jabs. My hope (pray) is that when Parker's team relocates here and discover just how different the structure is from the time he departed AMR, there will be changes and improvement. We shall see, right?

AWAAlum 1
That's his forte. It's my sincerest hope all of these naysayers will be pleasantly surprised.

I think it would be worth the investment. Today information is everything, and if you are not on par, or with the leaders in IT, the company faces speed bumps to improvement and gaining a more competitive edge.

I am not saying throw money at it and it will go away, but having a robust system where everyone is in the loop, or at least has access, aids in decision making before a crisis occurs.

I would like to thank Southwest for destroying the airline industry. You successfully brainwashed people that having no food (or any luxuries) and being treated like cattle is the norm. You aren't as cheap as you think you are. I saved $150 by flying AA DFW-LAS over SWA last week. Even if AA was more expensive, it's better than flying next to Billy Bo Bob Jo Jerry Jackson Jr with sandals and yellow fungal toes, and duct taped coolers as luggage.

I don't see it as snob appeal as much as I see profiling or stereo-typing. I had the same assumptions of SWA before I flew them. My first flights were great and made me a return customer. Yes, they aren't the cheapest anymore, just did OMA-LAS on AA for $175 less. If the prices are close and i can get there without a stop, yes I'll take SWA. Especially considering how rude the desk people were at LAS for AA. I've actually had more "Billy-bob's" on NW and Delta!

US Airways, AMR Talks Said to Intensify as Deadline Looms

US Airways Group Inc.’s merger talks with bankrupt American Airlines are intensifying as the two sides try to agree on control of a combined company before confidentiality agreements expire next week, people familiar with the matter said.

No decisions have been made on how ownership would be split between creditors of American parent AMR Corp. and US Airways investors or who would lead the company, said four of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

A deal would create the world’s largest airline, giving American the scale to compete with rivals that surpassed it in size amid a wave of consolidation during the past decade. The possible merger gained support late last month from a group holding $1.5 billion in unsecured AMR debt, people familiar with the matter said then.
