Lightning...can't believe how many times I see it misspelled even from a news source such as this, and in this story, even more than once. Hello editors?
Yes, the writer *and* the editor both abandoned their professional duties by trusting a computer’s spelling checker. In this case, “lightening” escaped into print because there is such a word, but its definition gives the story an entirely different, unintended meaning. I suspect that neither writer nor editor actually knew the spelling they intended.
What is even more unfortunate is, if I point out an obvious error in spelling or syntax, the response is a cavalier “Well, you know what I meant . . . .”
