The CIA, via its contractor Southern Air Transport, operated four 727s during the Vietnam War. These jets were "convertible" from cargo to passenger configurations and featured a cargo door in the forward fuselage. Yet the CIA figured out that they could not only haul cargo and passengers, but they could also drop them as well. Flew on "Scare Air" a bunch of times in S. Korea and 'Nam in 71. At that point and time of plenty of money, the military wouldn't even think about anything off the shelf. They had to spend money. And now, in these tight budget times, they are just as bad if not worse, hence we have the F35 boondoggle, when the paint isn't good and dry on the Raptor yet, and the A10's are saving the a**** of grunts in Afghanistan every day. I guess you can't be expected to do what you never learned.

Air America had some neat stuff. They used to scream in and out of a 2000' strip in Hue with an old beech 18 with turboprops hung on it. The money was flowing and they got whatever they asked for.
