Emirates to fly A380 between Milan and New York

Against Delta and United.
An observation, do Emirates not have another A380 to serve DXB-JFK nonstop? Or perhaps it has B777's nearing replacement and no alternative aircraft are ready? Why the Milan link? Could it mean Emirates venturing into offshore bases to operate A380 rather than all based in Dubai?
