A twin-engine plane crashed into the mountains of eastern Kentucky, near Sizerock (Bob Forks area), yesterday (April 27, 2010) at approximately 12:30 PM. Two people were killed when the Beechcraft 58 Baron (registration N1856S) they were travelling in crashed for unknown reasons in a heavily wooded area. The occupants have been identified as Stephen and Beverly Reardon.
According to flight plan information, the Beechcraft departed Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK) in Frederick, Maryland at 10:24 AM and was headed for Olive Branch Airport (OLV) in Olive Branch, Mississippi. As the airplane cruised at 2,500 feet and was 15 miles west of Hazard, air traffic control (ATC) lost contact with the plane. It took a while for a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) airplane to locate the wreckage using the crashed aircrafts emergency locator transmitter (ELT) and about two more hours before authorities were able to access the crash site.
The latest reports claim the pilot was having an unspecified issue with his airspeed just before the crash and had requested a lower altitide.
The accident site is located between Chandler Branch Rd. and Ulysses Creek Rd., southwest of Sizerock.
