Great shot Gary! I miss seeing World in the skies. Was this doing a Military charter?

TY, Darryl. Your snap of this one in Aer Lingus paint is superb. To answer your question -- Yes, this was a military charter bringing Marines here for a six week mountain environment training experience. Of course, this shot was numerous years ago. The training was conducted in the Sierra Nevada year round. (One winter, they had 22 feet of snow at their base and the temp was subzero for four of the six weeks. And there are NO structures there - everything is tents, including the chow tent.) When COVID hit, the training was suspended but it recently resumed. In fact, just yesterday I was at RNO to click a National B752 arriving from Cherry Point with a planeload full of Marines. And there was a lot of military metal here throughout the weekend too. I just posted a pic of a C-17 that was prepping to leave (and departed just as the National was arriving).

A little over five decades ago I was on a World Airways charter. I had no idea they were still around, doing the same thing now they were doing then.

Jim .... It's not. WOA is OOB. World closed up shop in March of 2014. This particular MD11 no longer exists. When World was still in business, they kept leasing this one out, usually to Aer Lingus but also to Garuda and a couple other airlines. But N272WA finally ended its flying career back with World and when World folded its tent in 2014 this one went into storage at Goodyear Litchfield (KGYR) in AZ. But just for a year. N272WA was broken up at KGYR in 2015.
Sorry that my photo was misleading and made you think that World was still flying. I used to post info in the REMARKS area whenever I would post photos but last week I decided it was a waste of my time. The only vewers who were reading all the info I was looking up were Darryl S. and Dave S. in Boston. And I noticed that many folks who post don't even bother to say which airport they took their pics at and/or put no info at all under their photos and no one much cares. So I figured that from now on I would just post my pics and save myself the trouble of researching and adding info that only one or two viewers are interested in. So I do regret that you thought this pic was taken recently. I had taken this one in 2010; twelve years ago. Please accept my apology. (Wave)

Gary, thanks for sharing the pic and details!

I always appreciate any info you post about your pictures and I wish more people were like you. It always bothers me when people don’t fill in the information. If they took the picture, they should easily know it all, including the date.

I really appreciate all the detail you added. It really detracts from otherwise great photos to have no info or obviously incorrect info.

Brad, Masonite, & Sam >> I will resume adding some history info about the a/c in any older pics I post. Also, some info about the circumstances of the photo in any current pics. I greatly appreciate your comments here. I had also received two e/m msgs from viewers I had not known previously who made similar comments. Your comments plus those two plus the fact that Darryl, Dave, Adelma, Alien, Lonnie, and Greg are interested says it is worth a few minutes of my time to research some history. Naturally, not everyone has the free time to do so, but I do and as long as there is interest by some like you it is fun for me to do. TY for your comments ... and support. (gcs)
Hi, Ken >>> TY for your commment and compli. (Wave)

Add me to the list of those that really appreciate your detailed comments. Your images are the best of the best here, but when combined with your research and knowledge, they are an extra special treat!

Mr. Schenauer. I understand your comment re not including all the info. I'm guilty as charged as I'm just looking at the beauty of the photo. I do find it interesting though to know where the photo was taken but I can usually figure it out by looking at a photographers past photos. Thanks for all your great pics.

Gary, I always read the descriptions and background behind the photos. The fact that you are in Reno makes me pay closer attention to your photos. I can usually tell the photos were taken in Reno before I read the info about them. I lived in Reno from 1980 to 1987 (back when the "High Rollers" flew RF-4C Phantoms. Good times.
