Flashback (Around 39 - 41 years ago back to the 1981 - 1983 time frame) ~~
An Empire Airlines Fokker F-28 Fellowship (N109UR) and a Delta Lockheed L-1011-1 Tristar (N716DA) are ramped next to each other in this heavily resurrected two-photos-combined panorama picture taken at an unknown airport (identified below in COMMENT by ejstar111 as JFK) sometime between 1981 and 1983. This picture, created from two separate snapshots merged into one, is another photo from the memorabilia collection of Mr. Larry Myers.
** Surprisingly, this picture contains the first photos of both of these aircraft to be entered into FA's photo gallery. **

This photo has been heavily photoshopped, a process that took just over 8 hours, in order to recolorize and repair both images, then combine them into one picture, and then apply further PS remedies to achieve this result.

The histories of both aircraft shown here will be provided below. It will be a lengthy read ....
1974 ... N716DA delivered to Delta.
2001 .... N716DA is WFU by Delta and sent to Mojave (KMHV) for storage. A photo on the JP snob site taken at MHV shows it intact but without titles.
2002 ..... N716DA is b/u at Mojave.
2007 .... A photo taken by Radek Oneksiak at Mojave shows the sole remaining chunk of N716DA, the tail, literally destroyed.

Early 1980s ... Two photos (one of the front portions and a second of the rear portions) of Empire's N109UR ramped next to Delta's N716DA are taken. Both photos are filed away in the HQ offices of Empire Airlines and forgotten.
1982 .... The FAA deregisters aircraft reg N498US from a Northwest Airlines B727.
1986 .... Piedmont Airlines purchases Empire Airlines and acquires Empire's fleet of Fokker F-28 Fellowship aircraft, including Empire's N109UR.
A couple of years later, Piedmont is bought and is blended into US Air. N109UR is now N498US in the US Air system.
1995 ... N498US is WFU by US Air.
Dec, 1995 .... N498US is purchased by Air21.
Jan, 1997 .... Air21 folds its tent. N498US is purchased by Horizon Air and retains the N498US reg.
2002 .... N498US is WFU by Horizon and goes into storage at Moses Lake, WA (KMWH).
2008 ... Mr Larry Myers discovers the long-abandoned and forgotten pictures in an old file cabinet that is being taken to a dump in central New York State. He salvages the badly deteriorated pics and scans them in an effort to preserve the images.
2021 .... Numerous attempts to contact Mr Myers are unsuccessful and it is rumored that he may have failed to regain his health after battling a long illness.
2022 .... The two photos he saved 14 years ago are subjected to extensive PS work and are shown as one photo above. Larry, my friend, I did the best I could. (gcs)

Regretfully, I was not able to completely disguise the "merge point" where the two separate photos were overlapped together. There is a distinct line in the sky just to the left of the light pole where the two pics were overlapped. I was successful in aligning the fuselages but the sky color tints came out a bit misblended. My apologies. Other than that, this came out OK.

Thank you for sharing the history Gary!

Thanks Gary for posting this. I was a third shift mechanic at Piedmont/Boston in 86 when Empire was bought. This one one of the first Fokkers I worked on as Empire had an RON Fokker at Boston. Thanks to Larry for saving all the pictures. 5*

Nice work, Gary!

Darryl, Dave, & Greg .... Thanx, guys. Both pics had color-altered to various shades of purple! I've seen the colors on very old prints alter over time but I've never seen entire pics alter to purple. So my first order of business was to try reinstating the original colors. Turned out to be easier than I had thought it would be. Gotta love PS, eh? I don't usually use PS for anything more than levelling, cropping, and maybe a spot heal but for these I needed to employ quite a bit of PS. However, nothing has been deleted from, or added to, the original scenes shown on either photo; just a whole lot of aligning and plenty of rehabilitation work. (Thumbs Up)

Given the disparate nature of working from two separate originals the result is exceptional. Yep a slight mismatch but it's far from an easy fix and in the end it's not so noticeable and doesn't detract from the picture. The history has been restored and that is the important point and overriding factor in my opinion.

Wonderful history and composition of 2 great BIRDS 🦅

This image is at JFK. The "Blue Box" terminal (as I like to call it) is the oldest extant at JFK dating from 1962. It is slated for demolition in the near future. Thank you for the memory.

Gavin and William >> Hi to both of you and many Thanx for the kind comments. As I noted above, it took a while to restore these and make them presentable again but it was a pleasure for me to invest the time to insure Larry Myers's foresight in saving both photos paid off. (And Thank Goodness for 21st century Photoshop -- no way could I have done this without the many features it has.)
ejstar >> My sincere Thanks right back to you for identifying the airport. (I'll make the correction.) I sort of suspected it might be either BOS or JFK because of the water in the background but I'm not familiar enough with either airport, especially back then, to know for certain. So I appreciate you nailing it down. (Wave)
Gavin ... You posting here again (I hope)? I'll check in a few minutes. But even if not, TYVM for your compli. (High Five)

Gary, I do a lot on Facebook these days which takes time, plus sorting, fixing, cataloging latest pics as I upload to computer and FA has taken a bit of back step as that used to be very time consuming. FA swapped for FB but there could be the occasional one again now for FA. Couple coming shortly to see what folks think. Thanks for your thoughts.

Gavin ... Glad to see you back. I understand completely re: FB vs FA. I think you will discover that FA has changed and its gallery has significantly become more and more like FB. Many more "selfie' pics, pics of in-flight meals, closeups of items like aircraft tires, family pets, etc.; and (grin) even a pic of a guy with a satisfied smile after, as he said, he "joined a club" (the only items in the photo that had any remote connection to an aircraft was a fuselage window in the background and a bit of seatbelt -- I sent in an inquiry but there was no reply and the pic stayed in the gallery - lol). So as you can tell, FA's gallery is trending away from specifically showing aircraft and more toward showing "personal social media account - style" pics. You can pretty much post anything here (except graphic porn but the screeners don't care so it is merely a matter of time now) without being concerned about the Q of the pic (that is, unless you take pride in your photos as you and several others do). You'll see what I mean. But I and others are pleased you're back and looking forward to seeing more from you. (Wave).

Quite an incredible back story; I don't know how to convey my appreciation to you for all that you did to post this one photo.
Gary SchenauerPhoto Uploader
Jeff >> I sincerely Thank You for your Comment but as you've read here, the primary credit for the existence of this photo goes to the unknown person who clicked both pics and to Larry Myers who had the wonderful presence of mind to take them from a file cabinet headed to a landfill, save them, and scan them. Without either of those people, there would have been no pics for me to work on and no one would be able to view them. Larry had sent me the entire collection of old Mohawk Airlines, Robinson Airlines (preceded Mohawk), and Empire Airlines photos that he found and salvaged from the files enroute to a dump. I'm truly sorry to say that I've lost all contact with Larry, and the website he had created to display all the pics only pops up as "404" now ... and rumor has it that Larry did not recover from a serious illness. I've watched on-line and there has been no subsequent emergence of the pics he had salvaged, but I have them all. I had started posting them on FA every so often (view my folder and look for old Bl & Wh pics of Mohawk aircraft) .... until an FA agent named Michael emailed me that FA did not want old photos of old aircraft and no-longer-existing airlines in its gallery because "... we {meaning the people at FA who supervise the gallery} only accept FIVE STAR photos in our gallery." (I kid you not- THAT'S what he wrote.) That was no skin off my nose (after all, I have the photos and can see and send them to whomever I want); it is FA and its viewers who are losing out on pics of aviation history, so (after I was finally able to stop laughing about the "we only accept FIVE STAR photos" remark), I discontinued sharing them here as ordained by Michael at FA. If you are interested, send an e/m to [email protected] for further info re: Larry's old pics and some of mine that are rare pics of historic aircraft. And once again, on behalf of Larry and myself, I Thank You for your very kind Comment. (gcs) PS - Don't forget to put the letter "e" on the word "Olde" or your e/m won't get to me.
warmwynds
WHERE is this Gallery that Michael of the FA Site says" They only accept 5-star photos?". I like to click on the icon for that and view these amazing photos. Where is it? As far as this photo I like it and could care less what you did to it. Considering a lot of the crap that is posted this is definitely not one of them.

Thanks, Gary for this photo of the old-timer airliners.

For my old eyes there is simply no problems with this color alignment thing. I have Photoshop but don't use it as I just can't get my head around it - age again I guess, but I think you have done a simply brilliant job with this Gary, Well Done

Rich, Lewis, and Alan >>> Hey, guys, my Thanks to each of you for the kind Comments. I'm not very good at using PS for anything besides leveling the horizon, cropping, spot healing to removing little items like paper trash on the ramp, and reducing the dimensions of my pics in order to conform to photo gallery size limits. But when I DO employ some of PS's many other editing features, I always attest that I've done so (and it is usually apparent that I have done so - such as is evident in this photo). I'm very pleased that you all enjoy seeing this post, and I wish I could share the many others I have, but as I said above, FA's Michael advised me that FA does not accept anything but "5-star" contributions for the FA gallery. So now I only share photos of old propliners, old airlines, historic or noteworthy aircraft, extremely unique captures, etc., with recipients on my e/mail list (such as Rich). But again, TYVM for taking a moment to let me know you appreciate pics like these. Best Wishes, guys. (wave)

TYVM Gary! A great image which brings back memories of my time flying the Fokker F28. It was an extremely reliable and typically robust design with a spacious cockpit. You can even make out the Fokker logo on the powerful clamshell speedbrake, situated just below the base of the rudder on November 109 Uniform Romeo.

"FA did not want old photos of old aircraft and no-longer-existing airlines in its gallery because "... we {meaning the people at FA who supervise the gallery} only accept FIVE STAR photos in our gallery."

Staff is too young to appreciate Quality (pictorial or Aviation History) this is both interesting and quite sad. Young WEB MONKEYS is the conclusion

Great pic. The memories of these two aircraft live on...

Phenominnal work Gary. Tha k you fir the heavy and intensive work on the pic and history!

Great! Not just the effort you put into PS, but for the historical background. Exceptional!
