A small jet plane slid to a stop on its belly in a shower of sparks at the Daytona Beach International Airport on Thursday afternoon when its landing gear did not descend, officials said.

The plane’s rough landing closed both runways at the airport, causing an American Airlines flight to be diverted back to Charlotte, North Carolina, and a Delta flight to Palm Beach, said airport spokeswoman Joanne Magley. A second American flight was cancelled due to bad weather in Charlotte.

The airport’s secondary runway opened shortly before 5 p.m. for general and commercial flights. The other runway has since opened as well.

Airport officials said passengers should contact Delta and American Airlines for updated flight schedules.

The two people on board the Cessna Citation Mustang were not injured when the small, non-commercial, twin-engine jet landed about 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Magley said.

Both runways closed while crews remove the plane and inspected the runways but have since opened, Magley said.

Updates on the incident will be released on the Daytona Beach International Airport on Facebook and Twitter, Magley said.
