It's all about engineering and the Japanese are excellent engineers. If the legacy bizjet airframers can't stand the heat they need to get out of the kitchen. In the early '70s the Big 3 US automakers dismissed the small Japanese autos in favor of 2 ton, 10 mpg behemoths that were more profitable -- they knew what the US buyers wanted and pumped them out 12-15 million per year. Then in 1973 OPEC flexed their muscles and changed the game forever. Over the next 40 years the Japanese toehold became a major force in the auto market.
Whatever market Honda decides to enter from autos, motorcycles, generators & small power equipment, robotics, etc they seem to be well engineered and long lasting.
The HondaJet is an all composite state of the art aircraft with engines partially designed by Honda. The aircraft will be manufactured in the US (Greensboro, NC) by American workers. I wish them well and believe when the plane comes to market next year they will sell well.
I have no affiliation with Honda. Here's more information on their website:

"Honda's ambition of making jets traces back to its iconic founder, Soichiro Honda. The HondaJet will make Honda the only car maker in the world to build its own aircraft.

SAAB anyone? They laid claim to that one a while back. Anyone ever heard of the Ford Tri-Motor?

Aww Hell, Mitsubishi did it too. So not only is Honda NOT the only car maker to do this, they're not even the only Japanese car maker to do this. I'm sure this is just semantics, as I dont think SAAB, FORD or MITSUBISHI build airplanes anymore. The author must mean Honda is the only car maker that is building aircraft this week.

Ok, it's not just me. This new posting format sucks.

This is absurd, in the business climate we are in, another business jet will only add to the woes of the legacy makers Cessna, Beech, Bombardier, etc. These Japs do not seem to understand it. Oh, well, what is a few hundred million dollars bet.

This is an exciting project. I'll wait a few years before buying one.

Being made by Honda has to mean it will be GREAT. Honda rarely misses. This ought to be one VERY high quality biz-jet.

Due to the fact that Honda is a automobile company I expect that this will be a very low quality aircraft.

Haha...thats what they all said back in 1965 as Japan entered the auto markets. By they way, Mitsu already supplies Boeing. All the countries that lost WW2 can and do make top class engineering products.

I once asked how the ww2 devastated countries/companies made such a comeback. The answer I got was US factories were worn out by wars end. The US paid to have German, Japanese, etc. factories rebuilt with new state of the art facilities. Thus companies like Daimler-Benz, Mitsubishi, etc had a jump on our companies.

Very true James..it was U.S. money that rebuilt the industry. In the case of Germany a lot of the labour force was recruited from SE Europe. They also set up a very workable financial set of rules which included worker particpation and local politics. They founded a very good eduction sysytem too and left it alone.

In 1989 they successfully reintegrated the Former East Germany (DDR) into the existing economy. Of course they were ideally placed to make best use of the talents of other E Bloc conuntries too.

Rolls Royce started out making high quality engines for aircraft, and later started making high quality automobiles. Honda started making high quality everything transport or small engine related, so THEORETICLY they should do fine with aircraft. But I'll wait and see

LOL, I can imagine this in my mind... A 4 person jet setup to carry 5, single engine under powered. After you install the avionics Payload, you will be able to carry 1 passenger and 1 crew with 3 seats left over that will put the plane either over weight or out of CG.... I cannot picture HONDA making a plane, much less a Biz Jet, especially with the economy that we are in.

The article says seven seats. I never bought a Honda car, not gonna buy a Honda jet either;LOL!

Looking at there definition of SubCompact and then a 7 PAX Plane, it is probably has a cabin that is about 3 feet wide and 5 foot long. Sardines would probably be more comfortable in there can. Ad Avionics, full load of gas, and you will have to take the Co-Pilot out to get off the ground.

This thing has been in development since the 80s - if this venture wasn't backed by a massive auto manufacturer they would have run out of money and investor confidence long ago. Looking forward to seeing a flight review when it's FINALLY certified, will compare nicely with the CJs and Phenoms.
