Southwest Airlines gets ready for end of Wright amendment

提交时间:

One year from Sunday, the shackles come off Dallas Love Field, and Southwest Airlines Co. is already anticipating the moment. It is planning a full year of celebrations and promotions to lead up to Oct. 13, 2014, when the Wright amendment goes away and Southwest can fly nonstop anywhere it wants in the United States. Southwest Airlines and Dallas Love Field Airport are just about to get bigger.
That will be good for Southwest Airlines.
It is amazing how Southwest Airlines survived at Dallas with all the restrictions.

Actually our group preferred Love and Hobby airports

Southwest survived at Love because Texas is a big friggin state. There is enough business between Dallas, Austin, Houston and San Antonio alone. Plus OKC, Tulsa, New Orleans. Wright didn't hurt SW... it actually gave it a mini-monopoly that fit perfectly with their short hop philosophy. Wright didn't stop AA or Legend from trying to improve the service options with the 56 seat all First Class planes. They couldn't make any money at it and pulled out. SW was quite content.

Now I live 5 minutes from Love Field and a SW flight sure beats driving 10 hours to El Paso. Heck if they add the Vegas non-stop I'm sure I'll be on it heading to sin city for a weekend of partying.

But I'll happily drive to DFW for an AA flight to LGA or SEA.... (get my upgrade, enjoy dinner and get some work done) before I'll sit 3 or 4 hours in coach on a SW flight.

Good to see nothing has changed in congress over the years. The laws are dreamed up with utter disregard for the public for no other reason than to increase revenue and control for an involved party. The battle is fought between special interests and PACs and the lion's share of the garnered revenue then finds it way back to fill the war-chests of the involved politicians. I believe this law was named after ex speaker Jim Wright who was one of the most cooked politicians in our history. Well loved by those who benefitted from his scandals though.

If there is anything consistent about the congress, it's never ending greed and avarice. But good ole Jim was a much esteemed villain in Ft. Worth. Don't slander him too loudly at KFTW, they might "up yours" fees. SIC.

As I said to another poster, Bush did the same thing to help Kit Bond, R-Missouri, in 2005 by opening up nonstop from Love to MCI and STL.

Wright's district (Ft. Worth) needed the new DFW airport to be successful. So he was doing what his constituents wanted. Isn't that what you guys say Cruz is doing?
bentwing60
bentwing60 2
Sadly, what Cruz is doing is campaigning for the moral high ground, which, in D.C., is in short supply.

There is NOTHING moral about what Mr. Cruz is all about! Self-Centered and evil in his intent!
bbabis
bbabis 3
Strange how doing exactly what you said you would do and what you were elected to do is now "evil" in DC. Washington needs to recover from its unusual attitude and roll right side up again!

I hope that by some folks holding their ground in this deal will have brought the rest back to reality and some meaningful negotiations happen now.

If being self centered and evil in one's intent is your definition of immorality, then welcome to the fallen human race. As for Senator Cruz, by all appearances he stands for truth in politics and government which is anti-thetical to the left, something akin to a cross being displayed to a vampire. That applies equally to RINOs. It prompted the vamp Pelosi to let the cat out of the bag by uttering the truth about the evil and self centered corruption of the legislative process that was intended by the Founders to be an open and democratic process: "It has to be voted on and passed before we can know what's in it."

Apparently you prefer those who campaign on taxing the achiever and giving to the parasite.

Ted Cruz campaigned on ending ObamaCare and bringing common sense and less spending back to DC along with lower taxes. Has he gotten there yet? Nope. Has he given up? Nope.

The way I see it, a congress critter who ticks off both sides of the aisle and sucks it up and laughs when fellow "Republicans" call him names... that's the kind of guy I want in Congress.

There needs to be term limits in Congress. If they are not forced out we can't get rid of them. Congress has become an aristocracy that needs to end. The Framers never intended for their to be twenty, thirty, forty and even fifty year careers in Congress. They never dreamed one would want to come there and spend their entire lives. Then again, they were men who gave up everything to fight for the liberty of this nation. They had every reason to believe one would rise up, be elected to do their deeds as promised then return to a private life. If one cannot accomplish their goal in Congress with six years in the House and six years in the Senate, it's time to go home. It's time for new blood.

When they add a constitutional amendment for term limits they can add a clause providing for a ten-year ban on lobbying.

I am dang proud as a Texan to have voted for Cruz. I'll be even more proud to vote him into the Oval Office with Rand Paul right behind him.

But here's one bit of hypocrisy since you seem bent on that direction. Jim Inhofe busted a couple rules that would have cost anyone of us our tickets for a period of time if not permanently. He got a free ride. Then he bought off the pilots with his "Pilot's Bill of Rights". If he was so in favor of it, where was such a bill a decade earlier?

Well said Ken. I agree that any congressman or senator wishing to live off the taxpayers for more than 6 years should check directly into prison after leaving office. God save our Nation from the road we're on.

Obviously, you aren't a fan of his, but if ya'll get tired of him, move him up to AR and we'll take him.

I guess if they really hadn't wanted 2 airports, they should have went in right behind the transfer to DFW and razed it to the ground, like they did Stapleton and then built on it. When it's all over, it will be as any other 2 airport city. As Bentwing60 says down here, that's bidness and that's Texas
bentwing60
bentwing60 1
And they have yet to make an airline fly out of KFTW. They still get to drive to DFW. I don't. The old sayin is "It aint bragging if you can do it".
preacher1

Even you have to admit the money was always on the East side and that's where all the shots were called from, even for DFW. LOL
bentwing60

Preach, won't ever question your view of the history, but Ammon Carter was a disaster that the city of Dallas never forgot, and was never willing to sacrifice LUV for. Nor was Ft. Worth willing to forego Meacham, success or not. DFW made sense, and has proven to be a prudent geo-political alliance that has cemented the growth of the entire area. My comment merely addressed the fact that no matter how hard they have tried, FTW has never sustained any sort of 121 air carrier presence, and the presence of DFW will probably preclude same.
preacher1
preacher1 1
Well, back in that day, I really wasn't keeping up with the local stuff down there and all you saw from the outside was DAL and Tom Braniff and Dallas emerged as the powerhouse and Ft. Worth was kinda and seems to have always been the stepchild.

I sure hope Southwest flys from Love to Minneapolis. It would be much easier to get to downtown Dallas, than driving from DFW.

It'll be interesting to see what happens at KDAL when these restrictions are lifted; I know American has been talking about trying to compete with Southwest over there for years.

Also, as terrible as the traffic is in that part of Dallas already, I'm not looking forward to what will happen if Love Field experiences more growth. The expiration of the Wright Amendment might have something to do with the massive new tollway and double-decker highway scheduled to open here in 2015.

American has come and gone at Love several times - mainly just for short periods to knock out threats and then move away.

Dallas is just another big city. Nothing special about it except Tony Evan's Bible Fellowship Church in Oak Cliff, and Deep Ellum when you're in the blues listenin' mode.
Traffic is always "bad" near any large city. But in Texas, the freeways are where you practice for NASCAR !

Herb Kelleher was a very smart man to say the least. I have enjoyed his airline for 35 (thirty-five) years. I really enjoyed it in the late '70's and early eighties with those girls uniforms. ( I was in my twenties then) The girls had great personalities too!
Herb had certain personality requirements for all of his employees I think. Anyway, the very best of luck to them for the future.

Dallas Love Field, the Comeback Kid

Earlier this week, on October 13, 2013, Dallas Love Field began a yearlong celebration as the end of the Wright Amendment appears on the horizon. The draconian amendment, which has defined the airport’s history for over thirty years by severely restricting destination options, will come to an end on October 13, 2014. As the airport prepares to once again open up to the US, Southwest stands poised to strike and a new terminal for a new age is under construction.

As I remember it, this was travesty of Free Enterprise. Here was a good ole Taxas senator who did not care about free compeition at all, he went the way American and to some extent Braniff too wanted it: DFW or nothing at all, the hell with passenger fares. God knows how much money was unnecessarily drained from passengers.

Only the deceased Jim Wright knows how much money it made him. The definition of a good politician, "one who stays bought".

Thee Wright amendment is perhaps the most selfish, self serving anti consumer piece of crap ever to come out of DC...

I couldn't agree with you more, BUT, Jim Wright was just protecting his district and Herb started SWA and they have made it in spite of it.
KennyFlys

I had never heard of Jim Wright but just as soon as I read what the restrictions were it was easy to assume it was written by an anti-free market Democrat. And it was certainly passed by a Democrat-controlled Congress.

That part is definitely bidness. STL controllers got shocked as all getout when SWA started operating up there; especially with the short landings and quick turns vs. what they were seeing out of TWA; landing long and dawdling down the runway with a slow taxi back to the terminal, making the flight late.
bentwing60
bentwing60 2
So, the folks in Dallas, Kansas City, and St Louis didn't appreciate the trimming of the AA, Braniff, Continental, Fort Worth, Ammon Carter, et. al. amendment. All's fair in bidness and war. And I can think of several more prominent reasons to consider POTUS #39 a semi ineffectual individual. History is written by the winners, not the articulate. And I think the author of the original bill resigned, under scandal. I'll leave you to guess which party he honored.

The article stated that airlines can't fly from DAL to other airports in Texas? I'm pretty sure WN flies to the majority of them from Love...can someone clarify this for me?

It's a tad confusing but reread it. It restricted SWA TO those states

The Wright amendment, signed into law by President Jimmy Carter on Feb. 15, 1980, restricted nonstop flights from Dallas Love Field TO airports in Texas and four bordering states — Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico and Arkansas.
