Happy Birthday Boeing Stratoliner
"It was introduced 75 years ago, and only 10 were built. Hollywood movie producer and aviation pioneer Howard Hughes bought one of them. But Boeing’s Stratoliner changed commercial aviation. For the first time, passengers could “fly above the weather” at high altitudes because of the airplane’s pressurized cabin." (www.boeing.com) 更多...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
was sitting in the bar at Tan Son Nhut Airport, Saigon... June 1968 -- when a CIC Boeing 307 taxi'd up...amazing...did get a couple of slide pictures that I still have.. International Control Commission was set up to watch over the old French Indo China (Laos, Viet Nam, Laos) these planes flew from Hanoi to Saigon regularly all through the war...it's a wonder they didn't get shot down.... wonder what happened to this birds? majestic..great airplanes....I want one!
You ought to digitize the photos and upload them here! would be great to see.
That particular airplane was owned around early 50s by a small Ecuadorian airline called AREA which flew it from Miami to South America. Was not a success story, unfortunately.
Excellent article and video... Well worth the time to read and watch.... Just goes to show you why Boeing is and always will be number 1...
Tom.....two odd things: the whole time I was flying missions into NVN, the Hanoi TACAN was rarely shut down.......and yes those old birds were in/out of Hanoi daily!!
I think I caught a glimpse of a spiral staircase in the video. Isn't this the much later Stratocruiser? The 'liner wasn't double-decker, I don't think.
