Extra long-haul: The 10 furthest airline routes

提交时间:

At 06:26 local time on 1 October, the first Airbus A380 to serve the world’s longest scheduled air route – Dallas Fort Worth to Sydney – touched down in Australia’s largest city. It marked the 60th anniversary of Qantas’s transpacific service to the USA, which began with a Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation flight from Sydney to San Francisco in 1954. The Australian flag-carrier is operating the DFW flight six times a week with the A380, which replaced a Boeing 747-400ER on the route. (www.flightglobal.com) 更多...

In 1976, Pan Am introduced the Boeing 747 SP, a special performance aircraft that extended the range of commercial flights and allowed Pan Am to inaugurate non-stop flights to the far corners of the world. On May 1, 1976, Pan Am's "Liberty Clipper," one of the new 747 SP's, left New York and travelled east on a record breaking around the world trip. With ninety-six passengers and only two re-fueling stops -- at Delhi and Tokyo -- the flight arrived back in New York only forty-six hours from departure, besting the previous mark by some fifteen hours. The airline celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 1977 with another first, this time around the flight covered 26,300 miles in a little more than fifty-four hours.

Interesting that the quoted distances are all within 819km from the longest to #10 the HKG-EWR flight.
It would be interesting to know how many are capacity limited (i.e.. not all seats available) to make the flights non stop. If the ticket price was right (for us poor coach flyers)it may be a good strategy to target these flights rather than take a connection at a cheaper price!

Respect and prayers for you Sir.

The 757-200ER and 767-200ER with corporate pax load will do most of them as well. My hat is off to the 121 guys having a relief crew. Most of it can be done with one crew but it sure makes for a long day.

Relief crews...Dozing for Dollars. My longest B744 flight was MSP-HKG, 15:43 with 2CA and 2F/O. 'If it ain't Boeing, I ain't going.'

It just seems to me that any sense of profit goes away with relief crews that are technically unneeded.

Well, depending on the flight and primary crew time. Realizing they are a small part of the cost, if you do away with pennies, eventually you get to the $.

That's the first thing I noticed was that 7 of the 10 are flown by the best plane. 777-200ER/200LR/300ER. WHAT A PLANE!!! The 777-8X and 9X will just dominate the sky's soon.

The 777 is pretty much already there and kicking aside what is left. I don't even think the 787 will make the inroads it's supposed to.

I'm surprised the New York to Johannesburg is not listed. South African Airways Flight #203.
andyc852
Has to be close. My GC calculator shows 12,900km, and the HKG EWR quoted is 12,791 so very close

That flight I believe is one of the longest from a time perspective as a result of very light winds over the equator. I wish the article had also done it by time, not just distance.

Time is variable for the same city pair because of day-to-day winds, throttle settings selected, altitude, and the actual route flown between them.

Generally, the distance between two cities tends to stay constant (unless an earthquake moves a tectonic plate several inches), so that's why the editors of Flightglobal based their list on distance rather than time.

Thanks and I agree with all that you say. The capacity limitation I referred to is the trade off between fuel and pax. On these very long hauls some aircraft have to reduce the pax load to carry sufficient fuel for the trip plus required reserves etc. I had heard (not substantiated) that the 744 from DFW to BNE/SYD was capacity limited even to get to BNE. I was just wondering if the A388. I will post the question on the airlines discussion forum and see who knows. There are some knowledgable ATPs on that forum
Thanks

Last I heard the 744 could do it non stop if winds weren't but that a lot of the time they made fuel stop necessary. From what I have heard was that the 388 could do it. Only reason it was not done earlier was that DFW was not 380 qualified.
andyc852
Thanks Preacher. I had hoped you would reply. So to confirm you think that the A388 can do the trip with a full cabin and bags and maybe some cargo.
I had not thought about DFW having to upgrade for the A388. They have two a day (well most days) Emirates and Qantas. The other one of interest is the DL 772 from JNB to ATL. Hot and High JNB adds to the mix!

Well, from what I saw, they weren't qualified until end of September, and the Red Roo was the 1st one in. As far as I know the 380 has no problem. The 744 didn't either as far as I know, on capacity. It was just fuel and headwinds would get them at times.
andyc852
OK Thanks.
I guess we will see what happens to the A388 in the winter westbound, although crossing the equator will probably affect the headwinds as well!
RedRoo was the first in to DFW but only by 2 days!

Yeah, when you hit that equator over either pond, it's a different world. I guess my ticket is punched. I just got home after a week in the hospital, losing a lung and my voice to cancer. I was pretty much retired anyway and my ticket would have expired at November end anyway and probably looking at insulin within a month so I guess memories and advice is all I'll be good for. LOL

Take care of yourself and our wishes for a speedy recovery. There are a lot of uninformed and opinionated folks on this site. I may be uninformed but try to make that clear, but your posts and responses have always been reliable and helpful, certainly to me.
As you recover take a quick look on you tube and search on Courchevel takeoff 2014. I posted it. It was not me but a few minutes later I got to perform a take off and a landing at this airport. Elevation 6600 ft and 175-0 ft long.A big one on my bucket list!
Hang in there

I would have loved to have able to take the L 1049 Super Connie flight from Sydney, maybe had a engine problem with a little smoke no fire and made a emergency landing on one of the Pacific Islands. a sort of John Wayne in the High and Mighty experience.

Not 1 a340 on the list
They use to own these long haul routes.

As with the 707's and others, they got replaced.

4-engine passenger jets are going to be extinct fairly soon except for the extra-large ones. 747 retirements are being announced by various airlines (including Delta) now.
andyc852
Role of the A350 I think. Head to head with B787
The Singapore SIN-EWR was an all business class A340 but only about 150 seats I think

Since when did emirates start using an a380 from Houston to Dubai?

Early October. 2 days after QF started the SYD route

There is one, which fly daily TPE to JFK (the same route back) by EVA B773ER. It's probably even longer ?

And the winner of the longest city pairs in existence is: Auckland to Paris, north or south over either pole, 2 minutes difference either way. The A340 flew this route in 22+hours from the Paris Airshow in 2005(?).

Having made several over the top, it always scared the hell out of me, with 2 or 4 engines, to think about having to go down in that frozen wasteland and the agonizing death that would probably come with it if one did survive the landing. It was good to know there was a way out at beginning or end but there was a lot of time in between to get there.
