Holiday travelers returning home after Thanksgiving may be in for a headache after it was announced that hundreds of workers plan to strike next week at one of the nation's busiest airports. (www.foxnews.com) 更多...
It will be no disruption b/c they will be fired first.... Or b/c they expect a winter storm the shut down the airport first... That or it will prove how little these positions impact the operation. Pick which ever you find the best reasoning.
If they are so minimally important, perhaps paying them $15 wont break the bank and these folk can actually afford a Thanksgiving dinner... or at least a meal before they start their second daily job.
If they don't like the pay go find another job that pays more. Tough luck people wanting pay for work that is not worth any more and are not willing to go get a better job. The left wants every one to make more and says its good for everyone but when prices go up then they whine.
Sorry, but the jobs just aren't there. My wife just got her first full-time job in two years, and the previous one didn't even pay her $11/hr even though it was at corporate HQ. Her last job only gave salaried employees full-time hours; even the supervisors who were paid hourly were part-time.
Oh, she also has a degree in computer programming and networking, but has never been able to find a job in that field because she needs 3 years of experience for an entry level job.
So? Just because one has a degree means they are qualified to enter the field in which they majored. Every one starts at the bottom and works their way up. So entry level is what it is. In your wife's case, she has to realize the level at which she enters the field will be at the low end. Many jobs go unfilled because new grads refuse to take entry level positions.
Seattle, where unemployment is at all time lows would beg to differ with you. So would Minnesota, where the tipped minimum wage is $7.90/hr and Applebee's sells a burger for $9.99, compared to Wisconsin where the tipped minimum wage is $2.33/hr and Applebee's sells a burger for $9.99.
Your tired argument is proven false by reality. Prices have continued to rise in spite of the minimum wage remaining stagnant for years.
Please do not be so delusional to think that the REAL number is reflective of the Govt number. Tens of millions are simply no longer on the "rolls" of unemployment. As for these losers at ORD. They all need to be fired.
The minimum wage is indicative of nothing. It is merely government mandate. In fact, the the discussion of min wage does not apply to the issue of this thread.
No...wages are EARNED. Not given. If these people want to make more money, let them acquire the skills that allow them to increase their pay. BTW, lots of people work two jobs. So what?
Should be. If I am the owner of the contractor that supplies the labor and some of my workers decide it is fine to make their own work schedule, they have essentially fired themselves by violating my company policy. A policy to which all hires agree when they decide to become an employee.
If they are not unionized what are they voting on? That the SEIU is behind it should be a surprise to none and without formal union protection they may have a liability.
Correct. As these people are not members of a labor collective, they lack A) Collective bargaining rights B) the right to express their grievances through an agent or intermediary C) the right to a sanctioned job action.
""It is not their intent to disrupt operations, but to make their voices heard and have their concerns of wage theft, safety and working conditions to be taken seriously," SEIU Local 1 spokeswoman Izabela Miltko-Ivkovich told CNNMoney." Read the name attached to the union blower and tell me the non-Mensa workers can spell Russian Mob, let alone that they know they might control this union. What state are they in again, oh "Chicago" a world unto it's own.
If they are not Unionized... The ones that Strike... Fire them once and for all. The only ones that they are hurting are the passengers and the airlines... The ones that are unionized... Screw them as well... I would not deal with them and if they do not want to come back to work, hire replacements!
Isn't it AMAZING that there were not Strikes in any numbers ALL THROUGH the obama Administration. And now that we have Elected a NEW USA President we have had 1 Strike started and 2 more threatened. Now you can see how the LEFTISTS Unions are going to Conspire with the Leftist/Liberal/Democrats to sabotage Mr. Trump! Even before he is in OFFICE!
Personally, I think they should all be making $12 a hour for unskilled labour, but having passed a background check and putting up with all the crap it would be worth it.
Chicago O'Hare airport workers plan Thanksgiving strike
Hundreds of workers at Chicago O'Hare International Airport are planning to strike during the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times at one of the country's busiest airports. Janitors, baggage handlers, cabin cleaners and wheelchair attendants, who are not unionized but are working with the Service Employees International Union, are seeking a wage of $15 an hour. Some are paid minimum wage, which is $8.25 in Illinois. "It is not their intent to disrupt operations, but to make their voices heard and have their concerns of wage theft, safety and working conditions to be taken seriously," SEIU Local 1 spokeswoman Izabela Miltko-Ivkovich told CNNMoney.
Given that the cost of living is rising much faster than the minimum wage increases, I feel for these folks. I'm sorry, but I don't know many people that can live off of $8.25/hr without having to resort to living with parents/family or on the street.
I don't think that many of their jobs warrant $15/hr though. "Striking" during rush times like Thanksgiving is advantageous for them, but screws anyone traveling through there. It feels like blackmail.
