Joby's 523-mile eVTOL flight: A huge leap for hydrogen aviation

Submitted
In a stunning validation of hydrogen's potential in aircraft, Joby Aviation has made an incredible 523-mile non-stop flight with its S4 eVTOL air taxi. That's more than triple its range on batteries, and an absolute landmark moment for clean aviation. Unfortunately, IMHO I will not, as will most here, live to see the day that regular commercial hydrogen powered flights carrying at more than a few people will happen on a daily basis. Alternative to current carbon based fuel needed? Indeed but I have my doubts about hydrogen being the replacement. Nuclear? Now that is another story!

Liquid Hydrogen? Wow. Huge safety risk and incredibly expensive to liquefy it. Not at all practical.

No passengers: remote-controlled. Not that big a deal.

There's a big difference between an aircraft carrying 80% of its own weight as fuel and actually lifting that weight "and a number of passengers". Think nuclear!
