Japan Airlines Flight 123 was an exceptional example where damage from a tail strike (followed by poor repairs) caused the 1985 loss of an airliner and over 500 deaths.

Sorry for being an ignorant civilian, but the article makes it seem like a tail strike, while not normal or desirable, is not necessarily that big a deal. True? (Obviously it would depend on how hard the impact is...)

A tail strike can breach the pressure vessel of the fuselage and cause the aircraft to not pressurize correctly, or have a “blow-out” if not fully checked by maintenance engineers. So yes, a slight hit to the tail will only take some sheet metal repair and paint, but if it hits hard it could ground the airplane for some time.

The video shows a good amount of sparks, so it might have been a decent hit. It looks like a landing I would make. (:
