You can't park there! Boeing 737 Max dramatically collides with two other jets as hapless airport ground staff misjudge space on the tarmac

Submitted
A Boeing 737 Max clipped the wings of two other jets as it parked at the Toronto Pearson Airport. Video of the collision shows the Air Canada jet approaching what ground crew had taken to be a parking sport in between two other planes. But the space was not big enough for the plane's wings, and they collided with the stationary aircraft. The clip was shared on social media by the Breaking Aviation News & Videos account. One other salient point- at most airports, the airport authority dictates where you will remote park a plane, it isn't just a ramper pulling a plane around until they find a spot they like. So obviously, for this plane to strike 2 other ,already parked planes, would suggest ramp control screwed up when they assigned that parking spot.

Both planes said they were sorry...

THIS is why you are supposed to have two wing walkers. I trained rampers for over 20 years. If you don't have two walkers, you don't park it until you do. Hard no.

I cannot believe they didn't have two ground marshals, one on each wing, to spot for the driver.

Is anyone old enough to remember the Contadina tomato ads of the 60's proclaiming they pack 10 great tomatoes in an 8 tomato can? That is exactly what airport authorities are doing, be it squeezing in an extra gate by trimming 3 feet from all the other gates on the concourse, or piggybacking planes on remote parking areas to make room for even more arrivals than they had room for.
As a former ramper, towing a plane into a space, or pushing it into a space, is a disaster in the making when crowding is an issue. Your field of view if towing in is in front of you, and the plane is 180° behind where you cannot see.Even with your head on a swivel, and going slow, at best you can only view A) the space in front of you B) the right wing C) the left wing. And with many of the older push backs, 85% of the field of view behind you has a large chunk of aircraft fuselage obstructing a clear view.If you have to push a plane into a parking space, you now have ( esp with 737's) the fuselage obstructing your field of vision as you line up the mains and nose wheel to the parking J line( assuming there is even one fully painted, and not just a shortened stop box T mark

Lack of training? No wing walkers? You would think that would be a standard, enforceable practice? We always had wing walkers, Always! What's with these guys??

Can’t believe the guy driving the Tug so badly accessed the space! But then again the way he took such a short angle into the stall it’s like he forgot he had a plane in tow!
