TSA sends Brit home for tweet

提交时间:

Two British tourists were barred from entering America after joking on Twitter that they were going to 'destroy America' and 'dig up Marilyn Monroe'. Leigh Van Bryan, 26, was handcuffed and kept under armed guard in a cell with Mexican drug dealers for 12 hours after landing in Los Angeles with pal Emily Bunting. The Department of Homeland Security flagged him as a potential threat when he posted an excited tweet to his pals about his forthcoming trip to Hollywood which… (www.dailymail.co.uk) 更多...

It's a good thing he didn't tweet that he was going to smoke a fag, they'd have gotten him on conspiracy to murder a homosexual.

I dislike the TSA as much as the next person, but it was actually U.S. Customs and Border Protection who refused them entry.

True, but Customs and Boarder Protection reports to DHS. Big Sis strikes again.

I am definitly not a TSA defender. Huge waste of money. That said, the oneous is on the person entering our country to understand our meaning of words here. If these people want to talk trash all over the world they just might find theirselves being misunderstood. In this case stupidity prevailed on both sides.

lol! I'm sure it's buried at the same location where the 727 is getting buried: and by the same people.

The fact is that if anybody makes a comment like that it has to be taken seriously. Anything at all that endangers any aircraft anywhere at anytime and is recorded or over heard HAS to be acted upon. Just NOT a matter to jest with. The US Stare Dept. does not make any exceptions and will often act without local agreement from authortities overseas to arrest those involved. If the threat was made about a US carrier they are rendered back to the USA. At this point the TSA hands over the ofendant to the CIA and that is that. Same happens all over Europe by the way.

Thanks for pointed that out Roland! But I'm not an TSA defender as well but when things like this come up. Expect a rough arrival when you mention a bomb at an airport. My CFI told me you wouldn't want to mention any bombs or so at an airport.
Derg
Roland Dent 1
Haha Troy...those who are serious offenders get taken away by a fast business jet at 0,9 and 43K feet. Next stop Langley VA. No messin. Never ever jest about this stuff.

Former Cowboys (and Sooners) head coach Barry Switzer probably wishes someone had passed that advice on to him.

Here's Bruce Schneier's response to the story: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2012/01/british_tourist.html

Interesting commentary.

Also, it appears that this pair came to the attention of the border folks in the US because of a tip off: http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2012/01/31/call-to-lax-tipline-flagged-u-k-tourists-tweets/

So the DHS is *not* systematically searching Twitter.

Yes, of course, "destroy America" means literally. Because you know, there's a single, big, red button called "Self Destruct". It's called "People who have no flexibility, no capability for critical thinking, but who suddenly find themselves endowed with too much authority over someone else.

It's pop culture in the US to. "I'm going to tear it up tonight." "I'm going to destroy this party/drink/keg." They were saying they were going to tour the nation and have an awesome time.

The onus is on the enforcement officers to comprehend context and meaning. This is why wiretapping, etc are all supposed to have restrictions... because everyone will say SOMETHING that will be misconstrued by someone.

But, you know, it's ok. It's better for us to be secure than to be free, right? I mean, we don't REALLY have any constitutional protections now, so let's just go ahead and destroy the few international friends we have left by kicking out their civs on their way over to spend money in our country. It's alright. We'll always be wealth and well respected and never need the help of friends outside of our own borders.

TO VICTORY!

And is it just me or does this new posting format suck? I type something, then try to move my cursor back to re-word something, and the damned thing posts as is. Got some bugs to work out here.

As a US citizen who has been denied a visa ($900 fee kept by UK Govt.)to live with my Fiancee who is a US citizen civilian employed by the USAF in the UK, and then denied entry into the UK to visit her and deported because "there is insufficient reliable information to decide on wheather to grant you temporary admission" and "Failure to give satisfactory or reliable answers to an Immigration Officer". I see this as a bit of payback.
rick737
richard weiss 1
I refer you to my dear mother who told me that 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Also, as I understand, there is no visa requirement for a US tourist to visit the UK.
littlejackal
littlejackal 1
You are right there is no visa requirement to enter the UK but if you read carefully, he was denied a visa to LIVE in the UK, in other words he filed for a residency visa. He was then denied entry, everyone is subject to scrutiny regardless if you don't require a visa to enter. The US stance on this is that you are someone who plans to stay in the USA unless you can prove otherwise.
Derg
Roland Dent 1
Are you sure? Only people who don't need a visa are military and diplomatic. The standard visa for UKers to USA is 90 days. The entry proedure for USA borders is one of the toughest. The are some 60K USA nationals who live in the UK. Thats why USA has two embassies here.
littlejackal
littlejackal 1
Yes no visa required for a stay up to 90 days. This is reciprocal, the USA has the VWP(Visa Waiver Program) and the UK is part of it. Travelers under the VWP must request travel authorization electronically under ESTA.
ESTA is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program. The ESTA application collects the same information collected on Form I-94W. ESTA applications may be submitted at anytime prior to travel, though it is recommended travelers apply when they begin preparing travel plans.
USA has an embassy in London, consulates in Belfast and Ediburgh, and a Virtual Presence Post in Cardiff.

I'm all for Freedom of Speech, but this IS the equivalent of yelling "Fire!" in a crowded movie house. While it ultimately was figured out to be misunderstood slang, I wouldn't want him on my plane. It reminds me of the German who was arrested for attempted hijacking/terrorism when he rushed the cockpit thinking it was the bathroom and yelling, "The roof is going to cave in!"--apparently meaning he was going to wet his pants!

I have to admit, prior to this article, I would not have understood the context of "destroy" as used by the tourist. Like James said above, you have to put the oneous on foreigners being a little more cautious with the use of slang terms.

Aren't we a hospitable country. These folks try to enter the USA legally, spend their hard earned Euro's to improve our economy, and enjoy the warm California sunshine. But no, DHS has to give them a story to tell their friends what a bunch of idiots they met in America. Sad part is they will be telling the truth.

Looks like the TSA pulled some of their usual unintelligent moves. That said, I'm not for letting foreign nationals enter US without a fair amount of vetting. We already have a border that is granting entrance for those that wish to remain anonomous. These two characters don't look or act like the're capable of doing much except partying.

Wasn't there a similar issue, a couple of years ago, where TSA only knew one definition of a certain word? It appears a TSA person overheard a woman, talking to a friend, mentioning the play her daughter was in, was a bomb. Which started a security lockdown.
