3 single flights to 3 small cities does not a major hub operation make. Seems like an attempt to get good press, and pick up a small amount of orphaned direct travelers.
But I laugh 'cause United could've kept a daily direct flight or 2 to a smattering of the discontinued cities that could support the reduced flight schedule, and not leave an opening for other airlines to as easily exploit. Plus taking the traffic directly would likely cost less than putting the same passengers on 2 separate regional flights through a hub.
