Why would anyone put "C-FIT" in an aircraft registration? I'm not superstitious, but that's like the 13th floor in a hotel.

Darn, that fat bird was Loaded with Jet-A for a max-duration flight.

I'm surprised they came back down to land so soon.

No drama, Pilots train for this every 6 months.

I heard it live as it unfolded. Disturbing, hearing a pilot call "pan, pan, pan". I wonder how much fuel had to be dumped in the lake?

I had actually witnessed that accident, one day I saw this Air Canada, Boeing 777 that had an unusual flight plan over my house and it was really low and looked like it had just took off from Pearson International Airport, then it this left turn which looked like it was setting up a downwind approach to 24R or 24L or 23 or it was in a circuit pattern. Then the next day when the story was out I realized that I witnessed an accident.

'Engine shutdown' forced Air Canada jet to land

An Air Canada Boeing 777 passenger jet suffered an “engine shutdown” after taking off in Toronto on Monday afternoon, which forced the plane to dump its fuel and make an emergency landing.

The Japan-bound Flight 001 took off from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport at 2:10 p.m. ET, and returned to make its emergency landing at 3:53 p.m. ET.

Two hours to dump fuel, isn't it a little too long?

Fuel dump with full fuel, the rate is 2,500kgs per minute, so to get to around MLDG weight if they took off at MTOFF weight of 351,300kgs to 251,300kgs you work it out. Not too bad considering it's the only 2nd failure I know about of B777 in about 15 years, last one being EK out of Melbourne Oz.

This really should not have been news, No one got hurt or Died, Plane landed safely, Crew did what they were trained to do.. Crew looses and engine, executes a "Air Return" to field, landed safely, I assume he declared an emergency. So what, I work maintenance control. Air Returns don't happen every day and it is for a numerous amount of reasons, and this one makes the news because it coughed a little metal. If people knew how much metal actually falls to the sky they would really be surprised.

707 in air -- 1 engine konks off -pilot says no problem - we will be 1 hour late - 2nd and 3rd goes - pilot says no problem - we will be 3 hours late - a passenger says - gawd if that 4th engine goes we will be up here all night.

An ETOPS quqalified aircraft is supposed to have highly reliable engines that are tested to exacting standards! So said Boeing when they spearheaded the ETOPS. This is some engine, so reliable that it can throw spares in the air.In a nutshell the philosophy of ETOPS is that "Two engines are more abundant than Four"

Sorry lady; your insurance policy doesn't cover falling aircraft debris but we will however fax you a copy of our recommended shops that would be more than happy to assist you in making all of your nessecary repairs.
