American Airlines inspects 47 planes for loose seats

提交时间:

"Out of an abundance of caution," American Airlines said Tuesday it would inspect 47 Boeing 757 airplanes after seats on two of the company's jetliners came loose. "Originally, American planned to evaluate the seats on eight Boeing 757 airplanes, but out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to proactively evaluate a total of 47 Boeing 757 airplanes that have the same model Main Cabin seats with a common locking mechanism," company spokeswoman Andrea Huguely… (www.cnn.com) 更多...

Definitely would be max legroom when hitting some rough air and the whole row slides back into the people behind them. AA is just not having good days lately.

For what it's worth my friend, on this deal, they have said that this is not tied to any particular maintenace or labor group. Being as they have inspected a total of nearly 60 jets, and it is all one type seat, it may be those new ones they changed out here while back; the ones that were supposed to give mor legroom.

lol. It would be real funny if it wasn't so damn sad & serious. The BR was bad enough but between the media feeding frenzy and all the labor issues, whether they can recover and have a viable airline or not remains to be seen.

I am laughing that your name is preacher and you said "so damn sad and serious"....On a serious note I think they'll survive...I think they do a few more South American flights than the others....They'll probably probably also save on fuel and maint. after they have phased out most of those MD-80

preacher1 3
Well, every now and then you got to say it like it is. Besides, I am also human and I get frustrated too. You are right on the SA but whether they can get rid of the MD's quick enough will remain to be seen. I'm thinkin' that most of that replacement stuff is still yet a ways out. It will be really interesting. You know, bad as it is and what a lot of folks fail to see, particularly on the maintenance, as bad as it is with the Alliance closure, Tulsa could have got some of that too if they had really wanted to divest themselves of maintenance. They may still yet do it but it looks like they would have done it all at once if they were going to.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the new seats AA is installing on some aircraft? The type that does not recline but, quote, "pivots forwards and out". It allows them to fit 3 extra rows in a 737, so I imagine it would allow them to install about 5 in a 757. Not much good though if the darn things come out of the ground!

And, to quote from AA's own website "The airline is currently upgrading its fleet of 106 Boeing 757 aircraft for use on domestic routes. Enhancements to the domestic fleet include the installation of new seats"
Donovan16
Don Thomson 1
Reported from nbcnews.com/travel :

Rows of seats have come loose on planes in recent days, which the airline is investigating. Overnight, a group of engineers, tech crew chiefs and inspectors evaluated 36 Boeing 757s and plan to look at another 11. They found the root cause is a saddle clamp improperly installed on the foot of the row leg, said Andrea Huguely, a spokeswoman for the airline. The clamps were used on 47 of American's 102 Boeing 757 airplanes.

"This issue does not seem to be tied to any one maintenance facility or one working group," Huguely said.

As reported by the BBC today: The problem was caused by these refurbished seats being installed. I only hope that this problem won't affect any other aircraft that has been refurbished recently...

Wayne..I have to tell you that it took me two whole days to find a 1 inch SAE socket for my tools. So what seems to be on the surface a ridicuolus situation could be down to some nugget in the office who send the machine off to a cheap fixer over on the asian side. It is not uncommon at all. It's all about planning and attention to detail. Now if you get some manager who is always on his mobile 'phone or watching youtube at lunch time...well...The techs in Europe use the Stahlwille brand and have full sets of metric and SAE...when I say Europe I mean Europe not some shack on an acre of slab in the Balakans with tools from the Sears 2008 catalogue.

things happen....most likely caused by their rush to get planes turned around during maint. since are trying to phase out their MD-80 fleet....less planes to take up the slack.

Can someone explain to me why they'd divert/return for a problem like this? Yes, loose seats are unsafe, but the passengers were moved to other seats, and the flight's going to land somewhere anyway. The plane is already airborne, and in at least one case it had to land heavy, which presents other risks.
akayemm
Er.A.K. Mittal 4
Unsecured seats ARE a safety hazard , that is why ! Elementary , my friend , elementary !!
pjtemplin
Pete Templin -2
Thanks for a whole lot of nuthin'. I already acknowledged that they're unsafe, but the plane was already airborne, and was going to have to land regardless of destination. Overweight landings are a safety hazard, too, so what made the seats a higher priority?
preacher1
preacher1 1
Well, apparently, the planes was within limits for a heavy landing, and there is a lot of difference in distance between JFK and Florida. A lot could happen in that time. Pilots call. I wasn't there but apparently, according to the other link below, Maintenance was done at both AA and contract shops, and no mention of Alliance, which is where the layoffs are coming. It appears to be on seat type and they are inspecting 8 other birds with an AA strike team from Tulsa.
pjtemplin
Pete Templin -2
"The plane was within limits for a heavy landing" - WHAT? It was a heavy landing because it was above the MLW (maximum landing weight) for the aircraft. The only "limits" for a heavy landing are an upper limit of that which the plane can actually get off the ground, and a lower limit of MLW. If there were ~5 open seats (3 for the passengers vacated, plus two more to raid some seat belts), the seat could have been belted into its general area.
preacher1
preacher1 1
Actually, if you look at the specs, a 757 (most variants) can land at full fuel if necessary. Most pilots don't like to do it because it requires a hell of a lot more finesse` than they are used to, BUT, the 757 I think was the last built in that category that could do so. Most are equipped with it but fuel dump is an option on those, not standard. Everything above there FD is required because of MLW.

onceastudentpilot

because it could of been more than one row of seats....aside from the passengers being moved those seats could have become an airborne hazard if they would have become total loose with nothing holding them down.
pjtemplin
Pete Templin -2
The news reports have been clear: a row of three seats (is that a half-row?) was loose. If we say "it could be more than one row", then we can say "something else might break", and we'll never get a single plane off the ground. Look at ETOPS: just because one engine failed, doesn't mean the other engine will fail immediately.

since the fasteners were not installed properly it was most likely just due to the everyday vibrations caused the engines, landings, take-offs and turbulence.

Since they're "airplanes that have the same model Main Cabin seats with a common locking mechanism", they should have been on the first version of the to-do list, not added later so the airline can say, "Look, we're doing extra inspections, aren't we wonderful?"
akayemm
Er.A.K. Mittal 1
A very wise and commendable decision . Infact this incident must work as an eye opener . ALL Airlines around the Globe must make it a standard practice to include these seat fastening systems in the " periodic check up " charts on monthly basis at the max.! Besides the visual/shake up inspection during cabin cleaning process. And both must be properly logged .

You need to call up and read the link below before you go off too far. It is a more detailed story; there are 2 planes involved; both American and contract maintenance but that the problem may be with the seat model itself. They are inspecting 8 other planes, all 757's with the same type seat and there is a strike team on the way from Tulsa AA to look them all over, so before you go to running your anti company union mouth, you need to read a little bit first!!!!!! Well, TWU at Tulsa is blaming it all on TIMCO at GSO as that's where the new seats were all done. They farmed out that one big job, which would make sense for anybody to do and not disrupt their other maintenance schedules. That sure as heck ain't a bangladesh parking lot type operation. It may be outsourced from AA but it ain't offshore and TIMCO haas been there awhile and has a pretty good reputation, AND while they may be inseecting them all, they haven't found that they are all bad. Well, I think each airline has its own thing. As we were all private, I just used 250 and then added 200 for luggage as we didn't have any scale check in. Like I said earlier, we were never that heavy or anywhere near MTOW. There was a weight balance chart for the plane but the only time it ever came into play for the pax was takeoff/landing. Ours was bad different anyway with the corporate configuration anyway, and like I said, just never was a factor

American Airlines acknowledged Tuesday that seats came loose on a third flight in the past week, and at least one analyst says that could shake public confidence in the airline.

In response to the incidents, American spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said, the airline grounded 47 Boeing 757s with seats similar to those that shook loose during flights.
