ALL MD11's have winglets, the DC10 didn't

Actually, NASA and McDonnell Douglas origionaly tested winglets on a Continental DC-10 before the MD-11 program began.

I love MHT. It provides enough comercial service but isn't to busy so you aren't forced to sit on the tarmac

What's a tarmac?

In the interest of continuing the nitpicking... :)

Technically, all of FedEx's DC-10's have been converted to MD-10's for a while now. Regardless of what FlightAware and other tracking sites show, they are no longer proper DC-10's, no longer have Flight Engineer panels, and now have the glass cockpit of the MD-11. There are black "MD-10" stickers on each side of the nose that point this out.

Well, the DC-10s that come in all the time at MHT are pretty cool too.

Now to me, this is a sexy video! Yes, I'm demented. ;-)

Some of the coolest things I've seen while flying is climbing out of Austin (KAUS) during departure with me on the right side and the FedEx MD-11 climbing out on the right side. That rascal is massive but still looks so graceful. The funny part is it still moves so slow, it seems barely faster than I am.

I like flying into Manchester. Nice town! My favorite, of course, is flying the MD11 to Austin, my hometown. I'll send the link to crew on this flight. I'm sure they'll appreciate it. It was a gorgeous day, and a great job on the photography!

I was the Captain that morning. You made my day. 10 years latter and 7 years retired, I still enjoy this video. Thank you

nice short takeoff. to see a freighter is an nice site it makes a change from seeing commercial jets
onceastudentpilot
tim mitchell 1
but it is a commercial jet...lol....I know what you meant.
howej011
Joseph Howes 1
no a commercial jet is one that carries passengers and a freighter is one that carries cargo

picky, picky, picky!lol

preacher1 2
Boys and Girls, an MD-11 or any other type for that matter is the same plane whether configured for cargo or PAX. @ Joseph: Your comment should have been "COMMERCIAL AIRLINES".
onceastudentpilot
tim mitchell 1
yes father...lol
kevinfreedman
commercial just refers to flying for revenue, either passngers or cargo. makes no difference.

Commercial aviation is the part of civil aviation (both general aviation and scheduled airline service) that involves operating aircraft for hire to transport passengers or cargo.

does it generate a profit???????

That is one of the cream jobs left, BUT, as close as they were, you know they saw the camera, as the FE was up by the window looking. Reckon they were showing off just a little? LOL

MD11 does not have a FE.

Well, what do call the 3rd guy then? There was definitley sombody looking out the windo over the FO's shoulder, and I'm a thinkin' they all had a 3 man crew.
DonBoothe
Don Boothe 1
You call the third guy “Check Airman”. I was the Captain
preacher1
preacher1 1
My mistake. I was thinkingg about the DC10 and the L1011. That 3rd man must have been a check Captain or a PAX
onceastudentpilot
tim mitchell 1
Probably was a check-airman....I thought they ended their jump seat program after that one guy had a pyshoctic episode and tried to crash one of their planes in Memphis...I am probably wrong but I thought that is what they said in their feature episode of "Air Emergency"
preacher1
preacher1 1
He probably was that. I think you are right on them ending that PAX program

We still have jumpseat at Express for business travel only. 9/11 ended personal jumpseating. Also, unless you are a crew member deadheading, you cannot jumpseat in the cockpit.
kevinfreedman
I jumpseat on the flight deck all the time. But I am with another airline and in the cass system. I do it every month for business or pleasure.you will see me in the jumpseat lounge in MEM waiting to meet the crew almost every month at some time.
SWEATINTHSWAMP

Todd,

Do you have to be a FedEx crew member or can any flight crew for any airline jumpseat on Fedex?
trwilson
Todd Wilson 3
Any flight crew can jumpseat. We see a lot of other airline flight crews jumping with us and we jump with a lot of other airlines. Only FedEx Express non-crewmember employees are allowed to fly with us and only for business travel. Before 9/11, any Express employee could jumpseat anywhere in the world for personal travel on a space available basis. Kind of like "extreme standby!" Imagine getting bumped in Manila. :)

SWEATINTHSWAMP

Thx. Any chance of a photo showing what the inside of a FedEx MD11 looks like when loaded?
trwilson
Todd Wilson 1
Sorry, can't help you there. I work for FedEx, but I am not a crew member and we only get the 727 and 757 here in Montana.
kevinfreedman
just about any other crew member can jumpseat with fedex express as long as you are in the cass system.

regarding DC-10s, you might pick up a copy of "Destination Disaster" and then perhaps you might just modify your opinion of this disgusting airplane.
kevinfreedman
The DC10 and its derivatives have a wonderful safety record. you have no idea what you talk about. Its a great airplane.
preacher1
preacher1 1
You obviosly don't have a real high opinion of this aircraft.LOL
