Lack of ATC staff shutters LGA

提交时间:

Flights have been halted into New York's LaGuardia Airport due to shortages of air traffic control staff, the US Federal Aviation Administration says. A US government shutdown, the longest in history, has meant that controllers are currently working without pay. Flights were halted shortly before 10:00 local time (15:00 GMT). The move comes one day after a stark warning was issued by air industry unions about the risk to public safety. US media report that there have been delays to flights… (www.bbc.com) 更多...

I find the whole situation with ATCOs in USA strange .My wife and I are Uk citizens and my wife is one of the Uks most senior ATCOs have been at Heathrow for nearly 30 yrs and previously with the RAF .She has been approached by numerous countries to bring her experience and expertise to them .Having a holiday home in USA ,we recently enquired about her being an ATCO in the USA .We were told that only US citizens could be controllers in USA ? Yet she was told she would qualify for special person status by us immigration and be accepted very quickly .
We have been unable to find out the reasons for this policy apart from a comment made about post 911 ?
Working conditions are not as favourable in the USA but what can be the real reason .There is a worldwide shortage of ATCOS and this policy in USA seems rather strange

I said they should have shut the whole damn system down after the first paycheck showed zeros! KLGA had the guts to do it and this stupid government shutdown ended 4 hours later!

It is illegal for federal workers to make, incite or participate in any type of job action or strike.

You might want to take a look at the law and alsohow Reagan handled things the last time atc tried to pull a stunt like that

The shutdown lasted 1 hour, 22 minutes. More like a normal delay for LGA.

That will still translate to couple hundred thousands of dollars to affected airlines.

I was just looking at the 10:00 am time in the article and the time Trump addressed the people some 4 hrs later. Anyway looke like it is over for at least another 3 weeks.

the folks who seek to privitaze ATC in america get to babble once again and they sound even more moronic. It must remain public so that we as citizens and consumers have a target to argue to that is accountable to the people, not the stockholders. Public ATC is not to blame here- who amongst us would continue to show up for work with no idea when the late arriving paychecks may begin to show up. NO one need be that noble. If controllers are really so necessary, then pay them now and every two weeks.

If you think ATC is not affected by corporate interests, you are naive
Highflyer1950
Highflyer1950 0
But it was the “public” that shut it in the first place. By the way privatizing ATC means not for profit! The only concern should be if enough airline execs sit on the board of a privatized atc, general aviation will suffer at most large international airports, however there are more than enough outer facilities to accommodate the GA traffic..

Except, of course, ATC privatization in Europe has been a failure.

Hey Mr Ignorant 1...ever stop to think "Some woman who makes a median pay of $60k" is a single parent raising a child or 2, living in a medium priced city, trying to make a go of it? How the H is that shutdown her lack of preparedness? And if the labour union calls a strike, it isn't some spur of the moment idea. No you are not working, but at least you have some strike pay.

WTH said she wanted to be on the news, and HOW in the hell do you know what the local mall lady makes? I think it is you who wants the attention!
This an aviation forum, not a "Bang my chest I am man" forum, so get over yourself!
As for the rest of the good Flightaware folk, my apologies.

I am pretty sure the woman wanted to be on the news, in a story relating to the shut down and the TSA...claiming to have to get Tampons from Goodwill KNEW SHE WOULD BE ON THE NEWS. I suppose at least we know she wont have a new illegitimate kid in the next none months (maybe ten though).

Fortunately, in our place if any staff does anything in public to embarrass the facility we can fire them with prejudice. Every now and again we get some nurses who want to create a union. We fire them to....now, back to our usual aviation adventures.

Oh here we go with the "I'm a single mom" card...Sick of it....Ya know what, if people want to make babies out of wedlock or get divorced because the two spouses want to "find themselves", that is not my problem.
We don't hand out larger paychecks or gold stars to "Im a single mom"...
if one cannot afford to live some place, MOVE....Or get a better job that pays more so they CAN live where they want.
One does not get to choose freely then complain about the results of their choices.

WTH are you rambling on about? It's not a matter of affording, it's a matter of getting money coming in...they do not get hired expecting to have to put up with no pay for over a month, and neither do the bills coming in. You realize how many folks live paycheque to paycheque, be it here or wherever? I'm sick of "It's not my problem" attitudes, and maybe it's time for it to stop and it becomes everyone's problems and they get resolved properly, be it this situation or any other!

Jamar you are right. This shutdown is messing up global flights. Connector lines in the world are not dependable. Here in lies the problem. Trumps temper tantrum has screwed up travel to the United States. I cancelled my annual trip to the Smithsonian institution. That takes about $2,500 out of your economy. That's tips, meals tour passes and shopping. I am one traveller think what a million people will really screw up Don's economy. Oh for you Trump fans...grow a brain.

Every damn day! I agree you have people bbreaking into your country. Put one of your reknown Army Divisions down there. Use rubber bullets. The Israelis had great success with them. If they dont work use real ones. That will end this travesty.

Snipers.
Cansojr
Cansojr 1
You would need 10,000 snipers in several thousand watch towers. Not very practical. So by the time we employee a heavy airborne division you can spend more than a 5 billion dollars in the following year. I am afraid you may need to militarize that boarder. Muchos dineros. Sadly that may be the only recourse. Mike Kohl's comment is bang on.

Aside from guns, landmines, snipers, army divisions. America has done great things in the world. More than most. This is a great democracy. Do what you do. Do the great things. We are your best friend (CANADA). We will help in any way possible. Let's fix this with democracy not bullets and put the government back to work.

Unfortunately this makes a strong argument for privatized ATC. Not what I wanted to see. I honestly think at the outset of this shutdown, someone will come up with the bright idea to say more of it needs privatized. I'm not saying that's good or bad...just probably what will happen.

This government shutdown will wreck your economy. Trump doesn't care because he's a billionaire.
Cansojr
Cansojr 2
Since some of you are so far in denial that no matter how much common sense you present they will never understand how global economics works. Some people want to print more dollars. That's dumb because you are killing the dollar. Trump spent 8 billion dollars in this shut down. You obviously refuse to hear me. Buy a Wall Street Journal. If the words are to hard to understand (sigh) turn on your TV and comfortably sit back as your brain shuts down.

Sour Grapes. Everyone is going to get paid.

There was a fatal at a nearby airport. FAA guy showed up long enough to give two paragraphs to the local paper. 'If there was a control tower the shutdown would have affected the staffing' and 'the investigation will be delayed due to the shutdown.'
