He may have researched the law and nothing on the books prevented him from building it, and he may not even be in trouble with the FAA depending on altitude and all, but I expect them 4 shots into the woods is what got everybody's attention, not to mention posting it out there on social media for the whole world to see. Some people don't seem to be able to go to the bathroom anymore without posting it. That's a special kind of stupid.

Sure drops the price of a helicopter gun ship.
avihais
Why the FAA when the video does not show a breach of airspace (Unless they tracked it on the way?)Would it not be the police reckless discharge of a firearm.

Don't know the US laws but here you need to have a gun licence and firearms have to be registered. So is it legal to mount gun on a Cessna in the US. Maybe the Icon crew should make it a marketing spin for the A5. I agree with preacher1 got to put everything on YT and post screeds of personal crapola on Faceache.

As per the story and a post below, they are looking at " careless and reckless operation " and the local PD is investigating also, but good bad or indifferent, neither one of those agencies would have known about it if he had not posted it. You can't fix stupid.

BATF is sure to be involved as well.

Well, he may get real popular for a day or 2 but the cop on CBS this morning said there was not a law broken, especially since it all appeared to happen on his own property. Once again, if he hadn't posted about it, nobody would've known and we would not be having this conversation.

I wonder if the bullet obeyed that law and stayed on the shooter's property. They do have a way of traveling a good distance. Where I live, it's illegal to shoot a firearm inside the limits.
Bernie20910
Bernie20910 1
Not sure if local PD can enforce Federal BATF regs though. Either way, he's looking at a permanent spot on the radar of BATF, FBI, DHS, the no-fly list, etc.

yep. Although it is really a big nothing, every one of them will want some glory now. If he would have just kept his mouth shut.

Exactly what it boils down to. How dare you make something that the government would have you believe only THEY are allowed to have.

Surprised it took this long

It probably didn't. It just took this long for someone stupid enough to blast it to the world.

I see a lot of comments, but none of you have focused outside the obvious. The obvious deals with waving a red flag saying, 'look what I've done and you can't catch me". The focus may want to be on the question of, 'why". Kind of like a straight kid who overnight arms himself and then goes to school on a sucide mission. After the fact there are always a lot of us asking, "why'. That may well be the primary question that shoud be asking here, "why", "what were you going to do with it?", "who were you going after?" So far, from this blog he has eluded all of these questions and will slip off the radar in a few weeks - but where will he surface the next time we hear about him, hmmm?

Crossbows were made illegal by the kings in the castles because they could penetrate their soldiers armor! Maybe that's the same case here. This was just an experiment by some young guy who probably has a good start in engineering or whatever field he wants to get into. Much ado about nothing.

The kid is pretty sharp and the local PD tried to find something to hang him on and couldn't - they now have him in their sights for other things that they could hang him on (which I'm assuming a lawyer worth their salt will get tossed quickly).

He built his own electric car from the body of an obscure European vehicle and drives it all around the state.

The alphabet groups are sure to all try and get something on him (FAA, ATF, etc) but ultimately every view of that youtube video puts money in his pocket.

A drone equipped with a gun, seriously a bad call

That is what they are looking at and Clinton police are looking at it too but whole thing is, if he had not posted it, nobody would have known about it.

I wouldn't have been surprised if he had bragged to lots of people about it, even if he hadn't posted it.

Yeah, but no proof. LOL

That's true. But, babbling to others about something that can get you into trouble isn't the greatest move either!

You are correct. I don't guess I would be so adamant about FB and YT if we had had a string of stupids by some young ones down here. It's like I told one down here a couple weeks ago and he said he could post anything he wanted to. I said that was correct, his right and all that, but he happened to tell of a n earlier felony conviction that had gotten expunged, not pardoned, just expunged, and an HR friend of mine saw it, that had him lined up for a dang good job, but he had said NO on the app and it killed any chance. Life is a bitch sometimes.

I wonder when these things became classified as "drones". When I was a kid, some kids parents purchased "remote controlled" planes. They'd fly round and round and round, and the noise would make you crazy. When did they stop being toys and become these privacy invasive nuisances? (Not to mention weapons.)

It's a very sophisticated scheme that the government and its media mouthpieces have in place over the unintelligent and ignorant. Nothing is what it is. It is what you THINK it is. e.g. They want you to think that a tax refund is a benevolent gift from Uncle Sam when it is actually a very small return of monies previously confiscated from you. Think for yourself, use your God-given common sense, vote for leaders not politicians, and this nonsense can be turned around.

If you'll pardon the double pun, it's just a buzzword.

This might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. There have been numerous complaints to the FAA and law enforcement regarding privately owned drones interfering with aerial firefighting operations, neighborhood spying, and flying in restricted areas. This might be what brings licensing, restrictions or even bans on private drones.

Firefighters should be able to break out the goose gun and take these 'toys' down when it is interferring with flight operations at a fire scene, the police should be able to do the same in lawfully restricted areas that would be considered a public danger. Otherwise, a wrist rocket works pretty well for the neighborhood spying problem - no illegal firearms discharge and is quite so as not to disturb the neighbors.

And now he has opened up a whole new line of terrorism ideas to those out there intending to do as much harm as they can. Now instead of flashing green lasers at pilots they can launch a drone and shoot at them and anyone else. This may be a far out post but those radicals do not need any incentive.
bbabis
bbabis 4
Don't sweat lasers or this idea as far as terrorisim goes. The media loves anything that they can create distractive news with regardless of how ridiculous it is. Its the thousands of stinger missiles that our government has "lost" that they don't tell you about that causes one to worry.

Well, it just made the National News. On CBS a deputy for that jurisdiction in CT said no laws were broken so unless the FAA wants to do something high profile, he is off scot free. Kid said he was encouraged by the university, but the deny it and even say it was discouraged because of danger. You never know on a deal like that, whether they did or didn't, and are saying they didn't encourage him now that there is a little heat coming up.

Does anyone think that terrorists hadn't already thought of this?

Bottom line is Law enforcement both local and federal are thumbing thru all their penal codes, FAA rules and regs. etc. and if they can't find a law restricting what this kid did there will probably be one on the books within a month and they will make it retroactive till they can find a reason to arrest him.
Good luck kid and be a little smarter next time.

The sons of guns TV show did the same thing with a hand gun on a drone. He may have gotten his idea from that.

Probably the most they can get him for is Sec. 91.13 "Careless or reckless operation"?
jkudlick
Depending upon where he did it, there could be other laws broken. It is impossible to tell from the video, but if he was within a certain distance of a school or on certain Federal or state lands, then other laws were also broken. This is why authorities are continuing to investigate.
preacher1
preacher1 2
Yep, and like I said, it may not have hurt a thing, and it probably wouldn't even been known about until he posted it.

Just 1 point - what was the point? Why a gun? Why? ...and the next step would be?
avihais
There was a comment about a show where it was done "Sons of Guns". Maybe a copycat. Maybe a phyco. Either way so many have commented quite rightly can't fix stupid.

I love it when show like Mythbusters say don't try this at home. I wonder how many YouTube videos end up in hospital, serious head injuries etc.

I think that the military and government are just pissed that they were beat to a great idea. At $60,000 a shot for a hellfire missile to maybe get a bad guy and cause lots of collateral damage, this has promise. I can see a predator releasing a squadron of these to for sure get one and possibly multiple dispersed targets. I'm sure that law enforcement also wished they had something like this particularly while the escaped murderers were on the lam. Kudos to the kid for inventing the obvious.

preacher1 1
You may be right. He did take pains to take care of things and stay out of harm's way and shoot into a safe are. His big mistake was posting it. There weren't any laws regarding development of it but there were for the operation.

See, this is why everyone else suffers from the government being up our asses with new laws.. because stupid asses this like this nut case.. so now we will have yet another law to outlaw the stupid..
