Pictures have emerged of the damaged Rolls-Royce RB211 engine on a Qantas Airlines Boeing 747-400 that experienced an uncontained engine failure on departure from the San Francisco International airport en route to Sydney late Monday night. For properly trained and proficient pilots such a problem was likely a concern but the safe return of ship, crew and passengers was never in doubt.

Not a good week for RR. Although this failure is (hopefully) unrelated to the uncontained failure of the Trent 1000 engine being developed for the B787, this can't be welcome news for their PR folks. And considering the adage that bad things tend to happen in threes, I wouldn't be too comfortable on a RR-powered aircraft for a while.

I agree with indy2001 !! Boeing is a excellent plane. If it happens In Airbus, have many alarms for shut off and after you think how will be the correct procedure into a large book!

If I look at the pics,the damage came from the inside!I think something was sucked inside the engine and blowout bij the engine.

Four years in the Air Force and three years working for an Air Line I have never seen oe heard of an un contained Engine failure. Those engines are designes to contain a failure of this type. It will be interesting to see what the NTSB findings will be.

This was a rotorburst, probably LPT judging from the section of engine it came from. The only way an engine contains a blade is on the fan, where the engine casing is covered with kevlar. The turbine casings further aft cannot contain a fragment from departing the engine.

Ryanair's C.E.O has suggested that two pilots are not required on a flight. If the one pilot is incapacitated during the flight he reckons the cabin crew will take control of the aircraft. This incident might change his tune. Well done to the pilots.
