Navy Pilots Caught On Camera Grounded Over Lake Stunt

提交时间:

SAN DIEGO -- Two Navy helicopter pilots from North Island Naval Air Station have been grounded over a YouTube video that allegedly shows them dipping the $33 million aircrafts into Lake Tahoe. In the video taken Sept. 13, both helicopters hit the water and one seems to spin out of control and crash into the water before its pilot apparently pulls the craft back into the air. so quick to judge

better wait for the results of the investigation before laying this on "pilot error"

there's a thing called vortex ring state that could explain what happened... Google it ...

who knows but they shouldn't even have attempted it if they were not allowed to do it

Lake Tahoe is a long way from North Island Naval Air Station - San Diego,CA - In a Helicopter.
The navy will take care of their own.

While I do not know all the details and will not rush to judgment, but as a former NFO, I have an alternate observation. What would the public perception be if they were going in, under fire, to pull a downed aircrew out of hostile territory or happened upon an operational accident without a rescue swimmer? These same maneuvers would be lauded. It always made me feel good knowing that these (to those of us in fixed wing aircraft- rotorhead) pilots were always practicing alternate options, so aviators would not be part of the food chain.

dmanuel, you don't seem to be older than 10 years of age to volunteer such a stupid excuse, pleaaasseee!!!. These jerks were endagering their own lifes, so what, screw them but the lives of the other crew members and on top of that playing like 10 year old kids with $ 40 million dollar toys, pleeasee, stop that crap!!!. Court martial is in the offing!!

chalet - what an interesting perspective you have. With such an intuitive insight into matters not fully investigated, you are no doubt, especially successful in business and life.

I can respect our US military 10000 % .. but not when they are doing UNAUTHORIZED activities ... of their own choice such as this ... $33 million aircraft x's 2 .... What were they thinking ? Kudos to the person who caught the video ... The Navy has plenty of GROUND based duties, these guys can be doing now ... if they are even retained after the hearing

dmanuel, stop for a moment and think about the numerous times when US military pilots of all services endangered their own lifes to pluck fallen camarades in arms and save them from being slaughtered by the enemy, the Viet Nam war saw various examples that earned some of the heroes the Medal of Honor, quite rightfully so. Don't put these brave and intelligent pilots with glorius pasts in the same category as those clowns.

1) Could have been student error
2) Could have been Hot Dog showing off
3) Crew will probably never fly with pilot again reguardless of 1 or 2
4) Review board will be complete
5) No pilot is his right mind would totally put his aircraft under water
6) A few more inches the turbines would have had water injestion and failed resulting in fatalities.

If you never go to the edge to take a look, how do you know where the edge is. This country was built with people who was always looking to see how for one could go. These pilots just got a look at the edge of performance of aircraft and pilot. The both have limits and abilities. Now the pilots have a good understanding as to the effects of density alitude are are better prepaired for their next mission. If they were incompilent, they would not have been there in the first place. Let the Navy take care of this. Let us fellow American and Muslims be thankful for them.

Gentlemen,
These guys were slowing to a hover and lost control nearly simultaneously. It was not an intended water touchdown. Their error was to not recognize the density altitude. Given their successful saves of the aircraft, the bystander can be forgiven the impression that it was done on purpose.

As a guest pilot, I was in that exact same spot in an HH-60H just a few years ago. I wanted to slow to a hover but the extremely savvy aircraft commander wouldn't let me get below about 40 knots.

Needless to say, this was not the Navy Helo community's finest hour, but let's try to cut down on some of the jerking of knees. Military helicopters train to operate in high, hot and heavy locales. These guys surely dicked it up, but they were not showing off, flat-hatting, or anything else. They flew into a high box canyon on a hot day.

Ironically, the aircraft commander that wouldn't let me hover in that exact spot, is now involved in the investigation.

Cheers to those of you who will wait for the results of the Boards!

Best,
Jungle

One thing to be sure is that the Squadron Safety NATOPS officer will get to the bottom of this - I cannot believe that this was a last minute idea for these guys doing their cross country training evolution. As a retired NATOPS Instructor all training evolutions are briefed but probably in this case the ORM checklist wasn't gone through thoroughly. I would probably dare to say that complacency was also in play here. The HAC's hold the ultimate responsibility here and they will be held accountable for their actions.
I am just glad that this wasn't a class A mishap and the loss of 8 people.

Lets wait till the Navy finds out what happen an than judge

Radio Com. Btwn the 2 choppers should solve the mystery.. I agree with Richard, let the board determine what happened.. Then we can all Haze those pilots if found negligent..

The last time I flew between SAC and North Island, Lake Tahoe was not along the "direct route". But BZ for the guy who salvaged the water landing. WTF were they thinking?
