They didn't plan because, as she said in the interview, they've been flying often and this was the first time the flight crew told them the child needed a mask. They didn't even have one with them. Of course the child balked, with no prep, no "let's play a game" practice, etc. Not that a 2 year old will always play along at the critical time but the bottom line is that these frequent flyers didn't think it would ever be enforced against them.

If you listen to the interview I believe this family has been flying quite a bit with the child... and this is the first time (apparently) that they have been told the child must wear a mask (which is why they didn't have one). Had they been compliant in the past they would have prepped the kid, made it a game, etc. and this would not have been new to the child. Parenting 101. But, no, they never planned on having to comply.

Sure, you can take that attitude, but oddly some citizens actually try to wear a functionally useful mask. From the tone and content of your commen; I guess you don't. Thanks. I'm sure there are 300,000 mourning families who appreciate your consideration.

It is pretty standard for used items to be exempt from tariffs. Why? because generally tariffs are charged to the entity in the import business and not to the owner of the item. The "waiting period" for an item to become "used" varies, presumably based on when the market for the item would consider it used - this to prevent someone from becoming an importer of "used" new items to avoid the tariffs. For cars it's a relatively short time but for planes it's longer (airlines don't really care if someone else owned the plane for a week)

Uhm, yes, it is the same. The reason they offer it is to avoid the import duties on new cars. It comes in as a used car. There would be no benefit to Volvo to give you all that stuff if they still had to pay the import duty.

Volvo and other carmakers have used this rule (no tariffs on used vehicles) for years. You buy the car at your local dealer and Volvo gives you round trip airfare to Sweden, where you pick up your car, drive it around for a week (or more), and then drop it at the port to be shipped home. Heck, they even put you up in a hotel the first night. The car price is generally less expensive than if you took one off the lot.

Your point being? It may be fun to see what technological developments are being played with and that is what PM does - provide entertainment for technology fans. Nothing wrong with that (I used to read Popular Science regularly when I was a kid - PM at that time really stuck to, well, mechanics). But one really shouldn't look to PM for an analysis of those technologies or read their articles as predictions of winners or losers. They are reporting, not analyzing.

Well, let's just say that taking your technology cues from Popular Mechanics is about one step above Buck Rogers.

Too bad you don't read with comprehension. In the first sentence of your quote you seem to have missed the word "from". Masks, in general, are worn to protect others. Do you think your surgeon wears a mask because he or she is afraid of catching something FROM you? No, masks in this context are worn to protect others. Your wearing a mask doesn't keep someone from spitting at you; their mask does.
