Flew these in the 70's during Deep Freeze '77, '78 and '79 when the Navy's VXE6 was doing the job.
Flew the A model, called a C-130D in the early 70's. Got 42 ski landings in my logbook making landings at Dye 2 (7,600' msl) and Dye 3 (8,700' msl) on the Greenland Icecap. Dash One (aircraft handbook) had a specific note that icecap operations were to be considered a calculated risk because we usually lifted off below minimum control speed to reduce the beating the skis took from snow ridges called sastrugi. Ahhhh....the good old days.
