Lockheed C-130 Hercules (69-5828)
Another capture of an increasingly rare (soon to be extinct) model of C-130 Hercules, this is an MC-130P Combat Shadow (69-5828), one of just four such Hercs still in the air. All four of the remaining Combat Shadow MC-130Ps are assigned to the Cal ANG's 129th Rescue Wing at Moffett (KNUQ). The USAF retired its last two Combat Shadow Hercs a couple years ago, and this one, along with the other three in the California ANG, are also to be retired quite soon.
The QXE DH8D (Dash 8) seen in the background as it is just about to land on runway 16R is Horizon's N434MK which pays tribute to "Milton G. Kuolt" by having his name on the aircraft. (See comment below for ID info about Mr. Kuolt.)
Comments
Mr. Milton G. Kuolt II was the founder of Horizon Air in 1981. He sold his airline to Alaska Airlines in 1988, and QXE has operated as Alaska Airlines but with its own subsidiary identity since then. Mr. Kuolt passed away in Seattle in 2008.
Gary, many thanks for your spotting photo ahare... and likewise for the information on the four remaining MC-130P Combat Shadows... along with your backstory on the Horizon Air Dash 8 that's landing!
Howdy, Cliff. TYVM. Also, a bit of additional trivia info ... The reg numbers of Horizon's Dash-8 fleet all end with the letters "QX" (for QXE - Horizon Air) ... except this one which, as can be seen, ends in "MK." So not only does Mr. Kuolt's name appear on the front near the cockpit, but the reg number is also another tribute to him, much the same as Southwest has honored Colleen Barrett with the "CB" letters on the reg of one of its three Desert Gold livery aircraft. Cliff and Greg >> Are either of you interested in receiving a bird strike snap? Happened on the runway a couple weeks back. Sort of graphic; four birds came out the losers in a confrontation with a departing SW 737. Can send to you if you want ....
Howdy, Gary! This is an interesting shot especially with all the info you provided. And I remember the bird strike story from a couple of weeks ago, and I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of pics of that. It easily could have been another US Airways 1549, but with no Hudson River to "land" on/in.
Gary... you are very welcome and thanks too!!! Yes, please send the "bird strike" photos... I would love to see those!
Greg & Cliff ... OK. Will be sending 2 or 3 soon.
