UNKNOWN —
My great unkcle is in this photo from WW2 Pacific Theater, but I don't know what air craft type is. I believe my uncle was a tail gunner behind the pilot which may help to identify the plane in the image.

Okay, I'll take a shot at it... My first thought is that it is a Douglas SBD Dauntless Scout / Dive Bomber. But then I think that it is a Grumman TBF Avenger Carrier-Borne Torpedo Bomber. Right now I'm leaning toward the Grumman, but I'm not 100 percent sure or either one.
Easy Peasy, on the Douglas the gear retracts inward and on the Grumann the gear retracts outward.
After some more research, I'm about 99 percent sure that it is the Grumman TBF (or TBM depending on who built it) Avenger.
Roger that, Jim! You're right. It just took me a while to get there. And don't sweat the typo. I work for Northrop Grumman, and I get it wrong sometimes, too.
