China Rolls out World's Largest Amphibious Aircraft
The Xinhua News Agency said the AG600 rolled off a production line in Zhuhai in southern China on Saturday. It measures 37 meters (121 feet) in length with a wingspan of 39 meters (128 feet). The report cites Chinese state aircraft maker, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, as saying the plane is nearly as big as a Boeing 737. (abcnews.go.com) 更多...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
In my observational experience, limited geographically to the sierra foothills, rotary aircraft do not usually drop retadant but refill buckets from local sources. I know it is a limited parochial view, but....

Your 'helio' which has to go back and 're-arm' with retardant is a straw man argument.
I agree something like the CL-215 can get there 'firstest with the mostest' compared w/ a dipping chopper. Both are valuable tools in a well-stocked tool box.

A quick search found the following article which supports the assertion that the CL-415 (not CL-215) is a valuable asset.

In the article written in 2013, the author mentions that LA County has contracted for 2 CL-415s every year since 1994. In what year did LA County or LAFD turn down the office for a $1 lease?

Wow - thanks to Mr. Wiley's post just now - obviously well-researched, I am very pleased (love it when my prejudiced are supported !).
Yes...supports my prejudice that no wonder large govt. fire services are so opposed to "Super Scooper" type aircraft - the bigger, the more horrible and dangerous to their "cause". I suspect we will see a lot of resistance to the Chinese "Super Scooper".
Let me explain why large amphib. water bombers are considered such a bad idea by verous special interest groups.......
First and foremost, they cost so much less to operate than a fire-retardant helio.
Secondly, they can carry many times more water than a helio. Given the weight limits of helios when compared to amphib. water tankers, makes for a good argument to use that expensive fire retardant then simply dropping water.
Thirdly, they can go back and forth to a water source, pick it up and drop it on a fire so much faster than land-based helios, ( which require a very labor-intensive support system.)
Fourthly, fire-retardant chemicals require a supply & support mechanism...purchase....storage...mixing...etc. Ahh...more labor.....
Is it any wonder that when given the opportunity to utilize a fleet of "Super Scoopers" on a trial basis FOR FREE, LOS ANGELES COUNTY FIRE DEPT. said "no"...?
