I'm baffled. Why ditch the airplane in the water for a gear problem? You are taking a chance on drowning or flipping when you ditch, not to mention totaling the aircraft. Aircraft land gear up on land all the time, usually with no injuries and minimal damage to the aircraft.
That was my thought. Plenty of long runways nearby at either HNL or Dillingham.
