There is not a big resale market for 340's unlike older twins being converted to freighters. Lufthansa, South African Airways and Iberia are likely to eat their investment in these aircraft unless they can convince the manufacturer to take them in trade.

My understanding is that Boeing and Airbus engage in trade-ins at a loss for them, meaning that whatever price is set for the oldies reduces their profit. A sale is a sale, isn´t it.

The Germans are torn between two masters. On one hand there is intense pressure to keep Dem Deutschen Volke working to produce goods for home consumption, at the same time they are Germans, and planes that are faster, fly higher, and are more economical are infinitely attractive.

If Boeing brings their best game to the table, they will sell of airplanes.

The campaign to woo an influential blue-chip customer will probably hinge on more than the customary discounts for a deal valued at about $5 billion at list prices. The German airline is also asking the planemakers to help it get rid of its aging and fuel-hungry Airbus A340 models, the people said.
