Pilots Rely Too Much on Automation, Panel Says

提交时间:

A soon-to-be-released study commissioned by the Federal Aviation Administration determined, among other things, that "pilots sometimes rely too much on automated systems and may be reluctant to intervene" or switch them off in unusual or risky circumstances. (online.wsj.com) 更多...

Use regulations and ops specs to force pilots to rely on automation; blame pilots for relying too much on automation. What have we learned today, class?

Many have come to similar conclusions after Asiana 214, if not after Air France 447.

This FAA report makes it official.

Didn't the FAA come out with something similar to this in recommendation form to the airlines a few months back? Basically from Company regs, as the post says above, the young guns are getting bombarded by the bean counters to use it and hence to a degree, manual skills deteriorate. I think most of the older heads like to hand fly a lot and probably do,but they are becoming fewer in number. Seems to me that some of the newer military avionics stuff is condensing a lot of info that the pilot has to deal with and that will eventually make it's way into commercial stuff. All this crap is one reason for so many complicated checklists, in a lot of cases of upset of some type, you need to know how to fly your plane cause you don't have time to pull the book. Automation is a good thing, especially on a long flight, but like any good thing, it can be overdone and I kinda think that is where we are today. I don't think it's a case of NOT wanting to hand fly but a lot of it is FORCED AUTOMATION due to company policy.

Yeah, sounds like the FAA was working on parallel tracks. They were privy to the information the report was based on way before the reports gets formally presented (hopefully soon). Shows how important they see the issue to safe flying.

Sad part is, this has been recognized for several years by senior pilots and there has been a frustration level exhibited by some of the younger ones that they are hamstrung by company regs. They don't have the seniority/tenure to complain as some of the older heads do and just accept it and go on, knowing it may bite them in the butt down the line. Hopefully, now that it has been recognized, it won't be too late, although it won't happen overnite.

Hopefully sooner than later.

I did a 121 fill in a few years ago and had a real young, low time FO. We lost the AP about 20 min out of the hub, and I hand flew it the remaining 300 miles or so. Scared the hell out of him. I guess I violated company policy being that close as I was supposed to have declared an Emergency and went back. Pitiful

"After seven years of deliberations and persistent industry arguments about which accidents and incidents ought to be considered...."

Makes you wonder what incidents were left out, who wanted them excluded and why.

Looking forward to the report when published. Wonder who will post a squawk with the link first.

My money is on Jsmes Farnsworth, staff writer, who will use his contact at NTSB, or develop a new one at FAA to get an heads up when the report us about to be formally released and publicly posted.

Don't let us down James. ;-)

I haven't seen him on here in the last few days and haven't heard anything regular Email in about a week. I don't know where that scoundrel is.

He just posted an update from NTSB (that he solicited by email) on the FLL crash squawk earlier today. That fact contributed to my assured tone above.
