Actually, everybody needs to get off of MAS's back about the flight path and portraying them as greedy trolls. Their normal routing WAS about 200 miles to the South, from which they diverted to an open airway, OK'd by ICAO, after wx got in the way. There were planes before them and scheduled after them. No biggie and nothing sinister. FAA had issued and advisory for U.S. Flag carriers but not an outright prohibition. Get over it people!!!!!!!

It would appear the author of the story ultimately agrees with you, rightfully speculating that the real blame lies with those who pulled the trigger.
Of course, it is a very fine line, and it absolutely does come down to controlling expenses (reducing fuel consumption). Ultimately, we know there is no way to eliminate risk; we can only work diligently to mitigate risk.
Is MAS run by greedy trolls? I doubt it. Was there a known risk in the routing? Most certainly. Was it a poor choice? Well, hindsight is 20/20, but as the preacher put it, "no biggie and nothing sinister".
