Folks, these are not floppy disks. They are called diskettes. Floppies are 8 inches in diameter and had a black stiff paper covering. These were definitely used in the 1980s and early 1990s. Earlier on we were using magnetic tape on big reels. I’m a retired IT guy and I remember it all. Those days were fun.

Allow me to point out that the incident with Volkswagen occurred during an administration who actually cared about the safety and pollution of autos and other vehicles. The administration now doesn’t care about any of these things and is over-protective of American industry. There’s your differences.

As a person who has worked in the information technology industry for 40 years, I can say with certainty that no software will ever be absolutely correct. Any company that’s worth their money will be constantly testing their software and they WILL find bugs. It will never end. It’s the reason why one gets patches for any software on a regular basis. This is not a lack of quality control. This is the abundance of quality control. EVERY company that writes software does this. If a software company does not do this they will go out of business.

There won’t be MCAS in a air tanker. One doesn’t use such flight aids when dropping water or flame retardant chemicals on a forest or range fire. It’s aerobatic type of flying that’s not compatible with anything but stick and rudder flying.

The cargo version of the 747 is purposely designed for cargo use. Hence the nose opening. The 747-8 is a purpose built cargo aircraft and that’s the only way they are selling it. Both, FedEx and UPS are purchasing them to replace their currently aging fleet.

Being a retired IT professional some of these problems are not new, the big one being well written specifications. Sometimes they are almost nonexistent. All of these exist in ALL software development at some point. The thing that prevents that to some extent is to always do software development on site where the work can be supervised by the client using IT professionals that are hired and paid by the company the software is being written for. It seems to me that Boeing didn’t do this or they were cutting costs by not using redundancies for the MCAS. There is also the problem of too much dependence on automation.
