Not much you can do with a windmilling engine that is out of balance. Just sit back and order another Martini " shaken, not stirred! "

The LAST thing I want to hear from a professional pilot is to ask for prayers......TWICE! How about calming my butt down and letting your training do its job?

I don't usually fly 330's, but when I do and the engine's shaking violently, I usually shut it down...

I was thinking, why didn't they shut the left engine off when it was causing the plane to shake like that? I understand that the engine was still producing thrust, but the plane could have flown fine on just the right engine, and keeping the left engine on would have maintained the risk of a dangerous uncontained engine failure.

I used to fly Saudia a lot in the early 90s in country and internationally. EVERY flight had a prayer before takeoff. usually a pre-recorded one that the FA would play, but sometimes when the player was inop they would have to say the prayer themselves...followed by "doors to flight and crosscheck"!

Some people pray before baseball games, too. Oddly enough, they don't always win.

Not a good thought to urge multinational passengers representing numerously religions to pray to various gods.

This pilot made an emergency landing @ the nearest airport even though a larger one was available 50-ish miles away

Smoke on the flight deck? Q RM says "Down. NOW!!!" or something like that. 50 miles might be critical. Right choice. Whether Air Asia X choice was the correct one will be subject to endless debate.

Craig Field, where the AA flight landed; is the old Craig AFB in Selma, AL that closed in 1977. Also interesting to a degree is Craig has no scheduled sir service, so they were serious abt getting down fast
