The ever ongoing development of powerplant, thrust and fuel efficiency/emissions issues has enabled the progression of airframe developement as much as the airframers ability to utilize same. The Garret TFE series revolutionized corporate aviation and is now passe, but it made very utile aircraft out of some short legged dogs. I.E. Dassault Falcon 20, CF700, Westwind 1121, CJ610, Saber 6o, P&W JT 12, Lockheed Jetstar, P&W JT12.

The airliner side of this discussion has undergone the same development from turbojet to fan, and whatever comes next will be influenced by the market, not the unanswerable questions from the back seat driver crowd. The 707 replaced Juan T. Trippe's flying boats, and the 747 was one of his baby's as well, (Pan AM. airways). Time will tell, though the future has never been less certain. Buckle up!
