After working for many years on military acft I have seen this before. Most times its a bird strike but I have also seen where the window heat malfunctions and causes a window to crack.

Reminds me of a thick DC-8 windscreen that was chained to the ground behind an airline maintenance hangar. It was accompanied by a chained sledgehammer, all to be used in working out any job-related frustrations. Many maintenance workers could not be hurt the beast Other than some deep scratching and a bit of glass crazing.

I poked around on FlightAware and it seems they run 757's on this route.

I have had the outer panel on the King Air I was flying shatter. On another, I had an inner panel shatter. Run your finger nail on the glass. It it catches, it is an inner pane.

I was suprised that they did not give Aircraft make and Model. Bad Glass, incorrect instalation, Design flaw. I lean bad Glass.

One of the biggest reason is Windshield Heat Controller... Temp runaway will crack them everytime.

Thank you, so this is not all that uncommon????

Not at all... Keep in mind that the Windshield is normally 3 Layers. Normally it is only the outer pane that is cracked. Depending on the Plane and depending on the crack you can ferry to a maintenance base. You cannot ferry an inner pane crack on most planes however and it does require in most cases for a mechanic to inspect the window prior to ferry.

ANYTHING AVIAIION RELATED IS NEWS FROM BIRD STIKES TO ENGINES ON FIRE TO IRATE AND UNRULY PASSENGERS..YES,HAVING A WINDSHIELD ON A LARGE PASSENGER AIRCRAFT "SPONTANEOUSLY CRACK"INTO SEVERAL JIGSAW PUZZLE PIECES AT 30,00 FEET IS NEWSWORTHY...THE PICTURE TAKEN AND SHOWN IN THE NEWS STORY TELLS THE TALE,AS IT WAS NOT JUST ONE LITTLE CRACK AS YOU MIGHT GET FROM A ROCK HITTING A CAR WINDSHEILD..IT WAS MASSIVE,AND I AM SURE THE COCKPIT CREW DIDNT THINK OF IT AS JUST "STANDARD MAINTNEANCE"...
